Drury, Prospal Placed on IR (Updated)

Updated, 2:55 p.m.:
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants has this quote from Tortorella on the Prospal injury...

“I don’t expect him for a little bit here,” Tortorella said. “We’re going about our business. It’s a player that adds enthusiasm to the locker room, he’s an important guy for us. But we can’t depend on that. That is such an iffy situation right we can’t depend on that, we need to move on. Not to disrespect Vinny but we need to understand that we need to be playing without him right now.”

...well that's not very encouraging.

Original Post:
@thenyrangers tweets...

#NYR have placed veteran forwards Chris Drury and Vinny Prospal on IR to reach 23-man roster limitless than a minute ago via TweetDeck

They also tweet that John Tortorella says that another player will be selected to wear an alternate captain's A in Prospal's absence.

...got to go with Gaborik.

So they're replacing Vinny's A but not Drury's C?

I would rather see Staal get the "A".

Someone has to wear the C right?

I'm guessing Callahan wears the C for now...Gab gets an A.

Staal is no leader in my book. But I do agree that there should be some sort of Defensive leader.

Rozy should be it-but we all know that he's terrible.

KD, just checked up on the rules for my own knowledge. Teams aren't required to have a captain, as long as 3 players wear A's.

Give the C to Stepan, he's the captain of the future so why not start him young. Kidding of course...he needs at least 1 NHL game before getting the C ;-)

It's encouraging in the sense that we're all not bummed out that he can't play. Over the summer we praised Prospal because he showed the MOST enthusiasm...this year with some of the younger guys maybe that will be passed to them...

I vote for Girardi getting the A. I loved his quote over the summer about how he needs to do a little bit more now that he has a big kid contract. It was a very deft way of calling out some underachievers on the team without being too jerky.

I also am not too concerned about Prospal. I think if he gets better he can be a spark for the team in December or January. This is probably his last year anyway & now hopefully this won't make the breakup awkward. (It's not you, Glenn, it's me. I just need some space right now. We've had some good times but maybe we just need a break.")

I would love to have Stepan get an A right out of the gate, but since that would cause an uproar, I would like to see Dubinsky get it solely based upon his consistency of fighting Mike Richards when we play the Flyers. That's bleeding Rangers blue right there.

no chance dubinsky gets a letter unless about 8 guys are out

teams don't have to have a c. one yr jagr declined it and we went with all a's. and teams don't have to have 3 a's so if drury is only missing 3-5 games they'll just add 1 either gabby or staal.

agree stepan has future c written all over him

KC said...

NOOOOOOOOOO!! Do NOT call Stepan the captain of the future! Look what other greats had that label, Mark Janssens, Manny Malhotra, Steven Rice.. It's a curse!!

Gaborik lost his right to get a letter when he decided Slovakia was more important than the Rangers last year.

Yeah, Stepan does indeed look great. But, suggesting he should get an A or C now (although a joke)or in the near future, and pretty much annointing him Rangers savior at this pt is like proposing to a marginally hot chick you just met a bar... I love the way plays and see a bright future as well, but don't spoil that by getting absurdly ahead of yourselves. have some patience

@KC, the CBA allows everyone to play for the olympics so it's a non issue. Love it or hate it, it's just the way it is. Before anyone gets on Gabby for that one you should consider what would happen if Drury or Hank got hurt? What if he had won the gold medal? You can't expect a player to pass on the shot at olympic gold, if they pass on that chance it's probably just a sign of a lack of passion for the game or drive.

agree with chef dave on gabby and olympics. any of the players would want to represent their country and do well there.

re stepan and the c its about 4 yrs away unless staal or cally get it 1st and are still around. but stepan has a lot more leadership even from jr tourny than other annointed ones like malhitra ortmeyer dubinsky
