Finding Consistency at Right Wing Beyond Gaborik

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants continues his training camp preview with the right wings and wonders where the Rangers will find consistent scoring beyond Marian Gaborik at the position.

Here is Gross' preview of Ryan Callahan who is one of the players who is expected to step up...

Ryan Callahan: Heading into his second season as an alternate captain, Callahan is often the soul of the team, kickstarting many first periods with his forechecking. Not that what Callahan gives the Rangers is any way deficient (19 goals, 18 assists in 77 games last season after 22-18 in 81 in 2008-09). But at 25, Callahan is not likely to suddenly blossom into a 30-goal scorer, though he is strong in both zones.. On another team, Callahan might be a checking line fixture but with the Rangers, he’s a second-line stalwart.

...Gross hits the nail on the head with his observation that the Rangers are counting on a checking line player on most teams to be a second line scorer.

...i, along with probably every other Ranger fan, loves Callahan, but no way he can be counted on as a consistent scoring threat throughout the season.
