Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun tweets this quote from Sather back in 2008 when the Rangers signed Redden...
“He’s been an all-star twice in the league. He’s the best first passer in the game today."
...ooops.
Update, 10:52 a.m.:
Gross posts this quote from Sather over at Ranger Rants about Redden seeming to play “carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.”
...like I say in the comments section if he had some idea he might feel that type of pressure why take the money?
Update, 10:34 a.m.:
Andrew Gross tweets that the move was made to give younger guys more of a chance.
Gross also tweets that Redden told Sather he'll take a few days to consider options. Sather said he would be allowed to play at Hartford.
Finally Gross has this quote from Sather: "It's always difficult changing somebody's life but you have to do what's right for the team."
Update, 10:32 a.m.:
Jesse Spector tweets that Sather said Redden didn't seem surprised -- "He'd seen the writing on the wall."
Original Post:
Arthur Staple at Newsday tweets...
Wade Redden to be placed on waivers at noon today, #NYRangers announce.
...i can't believe my eyes. I really didn't think it was ever going to happen.
...can this actually be considered one of the better days in Rangers history?

Enjoy Hartford, Redden!!!
Seriously though, Redden's not a bad Dman. It's the Rangers' fault for signing him to 6.5M when he's really only worth a 1/3 of that.
Seen a lot of good stuff from the Rangers this summer. Good PR moves. Commitment to youth. Shedding bad contracts. Staying away from high priced UFAs.
So much change - and for the better - wonder who finally kicked whose a$$?!
Kcin is 100% right, its a shame this guy wont be in the nhl. He still could play maybe not for 6.5 but if he were making 3 mill or less no one would hate him as much and he certainly could have been traded at a reasonable cap it. Too bad we couldn't have been smart like a dozen other teams and front loaded his contract and lowered his hit. Still excited about this none the less
Yes, Redden's contract is more the Rangers fault than his. I mean who in their right mind would turn down that kind of money.
But Redden also needs to know what he's signing up for. With that kind of $ comes responsibility and if he knew he might not be up to it, he would have been smarter looking for a better option.
Completely agree kevin, but 6.5 is alot of money to say no to and for so many years
"With great $ comes great responsibility..." - Uncle Ben Parker.
This isn't only a financial move. he played like crap.
Agree with signing the contract comes the responsibility of living up to those lofty expectations. At that point it becomes a two way street, you must live up to the billing or you are gone. At 3M Redden is a good player but then again he is being paid 6.5M regardless of where he plays. I don't feel sorry for him in the least bit when you consider bus/train rides. Besides he can always upgrade his accomodations if life becomes too much of a hardship for the millionaire.
1st off he is not a good dman at any price...the game has clearly passed him by...I wouldnt want redden on this team if he were making minimum wage!!!!
I dont think the money had anything to do with his poor play....1st he is was an aging veteran who was on the decline when ottawa was pushing him out....2nd is whatever skills he had left crumbled under the bright lights of NYC...isnt the 1st and wont be the last....
He can dry his tears with $100 dollar bills...good riddance!!!
seriously, happiest day for me all year...good riddance.
id say the blame is 50-50, no way slats should have offered him that much...but redden should have known signing a 6.5 mill contract and playing in the big apple would be a bit of a pressure cooker...
heck he couldnt hack it in ottawa...
either way ranger fans, crack open a beer and celebrate this fine day....for once we go into the regular season with some wiggle room around the cap!
and did slats really say he had the best first pass?? uhh so i guess kaberle, lidstrom and many others i cant think of were listed behind redden? i really need to get ahold of whatever slats is smoking in those cigars...
I'm ecstatic about this move! It needed to be done.
But, diss the dumb contract and diss the player for not playing up to it. At 2M a year, Redden is a capable 3rd pair D in today's NHL. A terrible dman wouldn't have only two minus years (+/- stat) after a decade+ in the league.
3 words. Ho ly crap.
Cant believe it. Some knowledgable people were saying it wouldnt happen and knowing Slats i believed what I read. Awesome day.
KCinMn and Rob Y, have you watched Redden play?
he isnt a good D-man at any price.
the contract has nothing to do with it.
he isnt an NHL caliber player anymore, who knows when he last was.
he had endless chances with the Rangers, and couldnt even play fundamental hockey
it was a disaster from the beginning
i’m glad they did it now and did not subject him to one more game at the garden. or even msg west where there will surely be plenty of ranger fans. he didn’t deserve to be subjected to that he is a human being after all. it was obvious all summer he was gone - i don’t know why so many were worried about it not happening it was a fait accompli.
be better for him to go to europe with rangers paying freight although i can’t see a team taking him even under those circumstances. he’s not walking from the 6.5 mm per yr. thata for sure. redden was done 2 yrs before he came here we all knew it except sather and perry pearn. good luck to him and his newborn and wife too of course. btw when cba ends in 2 yes he’ll be bought out with no cap hit
@ joe....
i dont think theres anything set in stone of a free buyout for the next CBA...although i could be wrong...sure it happened last time but i dont think its a given thing... heres hoping im wrong though..
p.s. this team is looking better and better every year, once we either buyout rosis or drurys final year or just let them play it out...theres another 12 million of cap space for us.
looking back, jagr wanted 2 years at 6 million i believe...and slats rejected it just to turn around and sign redden... blows my mind
jagr wanted more than that. he wanted to be highest paid player so would have been approx 9 mm with other contracts front loaded.
no buyouts aren't set in stone BUT the next cba will be even tougher eliminating things like burying guys in the minors and the obscene front loaded contracts. to get the big money teams to play along they will allow amnesty buyouts as 1 time event
better to let contracts of drury and rozy expire rather than have cap hit affecting the next yr when they would be free and clear. and rozy will have 3 mm in cash left on contract (5 mm hit) so teams near the cap floor will be interested in him for a mid rd draft pick. but that is for june.
comments are on pt here. and let's not feel bad for a guy who's $30 some odd richer minus taxes for playing sports
All the best wishes to Redden, his wife and newborn but glad to see him waived...still feel drury is worth half of his contract too.
don't think anybody "feels bad for him". but difference between feeling bad for him and kicking a man when he's down. he's gone nuff said.
wonderin maybe so but the us olympic team brass obviously had a higher opinion on him than you do. and drury has full no movement clause for next 2 yrs so you'll have to deal with it. did you also think he was worth 1/2 his contract when he led team in 1st yr in goals and GWG and even his 2md yr had 20 goals/
Its about eeffiinn time!!! now I'm starting to be a little more optimistic about this season....what do we about Drury's dreadful contract?
FYI, I'll be doing a post game live chat after tonight's game. Lots to talk about.
would totally take jags at 9 mill for 2 years over redden for 6.5 for 6...
andrew - 2 wrongs don't make a right. i woould never have taken redden either but not jagr for 2 yrs at 9 mm per. so choice would have been none of the above.
haha very true...just looking at the contract lengths more then the pay
