"Rangers GM Glen Sather said earlier this summer he would match any offer sheet for Staal but at this point most teams have already committed the bulk of their available cap space for the upcoming season so there’s little chance he or any other restricted free agent would receive an offer sheet."
...Staal just has absolutely no leverage here. Unlike with the Jets and Revis the NHL preseason hasn't started, so Rangers management can't see how bad the team will be without him.
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants adds this on the Staal contract situation...
"...when it comes to crunch time, the Rangers and Staal will come to an agreement. I don’t expect crunch time to be the training camp proper but I’d anticipate Staal being back in time to play a couple of preseason games."
...let's hope so.

I hope the Rangers are great without Staal and somebody steps up to fill his role. That way he looks even more like a fool and we can then sign him less than Girardi. Im a fan of Staal but he is asking for to much money and he should have taken what was offered. These players are so greedy. Look what happened to Zherdev he should have just took what the Rangers offered last year because now he is back in the NHL making almost half of what he could have been making. I have the same mentality when I invest don't be a pig!
well look like you were premature in your assesment as he is rumored to be close to signing. he will not pull a dubinsky and holdout in training camp
