Can You Give Sather Credit for Making Up for Mistakes?

John Grigg at The Hockey News says it's not all bad when it comes to Glen Sather...

"But for all his perceived faults, you have to give Sather credit for at least one thing: he’s sly as a fox when it comes to divesting himself of bad contracts. NHL.fanhouse.com posted a top-five worst Sather signings Wednesday and there are some bad ones. Whether they actually are the worst ones or not (Chris Drury is hardly a world-beater at $7.05 million per year) is up for debate. But take a look at all of those guys; see anything in common? None are still Rangers; all were traded or otherwise taken off the books."

So my question to you Ranger fans, can you give Sather credit for being able to make up for his mistakes (most specifically the Gomez deal)? Let me hear you in comments section.

...my opinion is you could give him some credit if there were only a few bad signings, but the shear volume of mistakes makes it hard for me to give him too much credit. And the biggest thing for me is two, count em two, playoff series wins in nine years. Yikes.

He turned Scott Gomez into Gaborik, McDonagh and Valentenko. Yeah, I give him some credit.

Yes he's made some improvement but jeez some of these signings are beyond terrible I can't stand the fact that Drury is making 7 mill what a joke...he needs to pick it up this year or we need to get rid of him.......But I still say FIRE Sather!!!!!

He wouldn't have had to get rid of the contracts if he didn't sign them in the first place. Just sayin'.

Making up for mistakes doesn't leave you anywhere but neutral.

You have to avoid mistakes in the first place to improve.

As much as I'd like to , I can't blame Sather for all these guys. Redden and Brashear, absolutely he gets the blame, they were just stupid signings. But Gomez and Drury were the 2 big free agent prizes in their years, as was Holik. Sure the contracts ended up severely bloated, but hindsight is 20/20. I think the bad free agent signings of the pre-cap years and the few years after were a result poor scouting since there was little talent in the AHL. It looks like the Ranger may finally have a farm system, so hopefully any signings in the future will be more reasonable.

and the far bigger problem is the abysmal drafting from around 1994 to 2007 at least. especially at forwards. teams with bad draft records are condemned to seek salvation at the ufa mkt where 90% are overpaid. meanwhile back to our b&m programming

were you complaining when he led the team in goals his 1st yr with 25 and in game winning goals. and 2nd yr was acceptable at 20 goals. see above paragraph for solution. draft better and don't have to overpay in ufa mkt

Joe, I understand what your saying but for that kind of money he's got to produce the same way he did in Buffalo and for what your saying about drafting your absolutely right we drafted Hugh Jessiman instead of Getzlaf, Parise...the list goes on and on....it makes me sick!!!!

say draft and 2003 in the same sentence and i cringe like crazy. huge speciman was/is such a joke. to rehash the players we could of had just really, REALLY stings.

i give him credit for getting out of some of the messes he makes but he still made them in the first place.
