Over at Blue Notes, Steve Zipay wonders what it would take for the Rangers to get the Bruins Marc Savard (32)...
"A second-round pick in 2011, Matt Gilroy (back to Boston and in his final year) and Sean Avery ($1.9 for two years).....I doubt it, but I wonder.....
Bruins will have Tyler Seguin ready at some point, they love picks, could shed Gilroy's $1.75 after this season....
Rangers would clear $3.65 million in the deal, have another second rounder next summer anyway,...."
...Zipay admits in his live chat today that he really didn't look at the math. Which makes sense because while the Rangers would be clearing $3.65 million they'd be taking on $4 million. As well as the remaining seven years (2017) on his contract.
...i know a lot of readers are into bringing Savard in, but I couldn't be more against acquiring an old, expensive, injured player. Big time pass for me.

I really don't want to lose Gilroy. That kid has a lot of talent.
I agree with you, Kevin. If you are going to rebuild with youth and gradually shed those crippling long term, overpriced contracts, why bring in a fragile if talented player with 7 years of cap baggage. There has to be a better way.
No Savard please....
Agree Kevin- kind of makes you wonder how much thought and intelligence is involved in a rumor?
Definite pass for me. Savard's contract is terrible.
yeah, his contract has another six years left after this year, paying him until he's 39. With his size and injury proneness, I can't imagine he's got many 75+ point seasons left. Screw it
That said, the center position remains a huge question mark, and a healthy 'Marc' is a great centermen. I'd be willing to part with Gilroy and a draft pick. Interestingly, you guys declare you're unwillingness to part with the aforementioned, yet seem pretty indifferent about letting go of Avery (perhaps his season last year left a bitter taste in many, despite showing his true brilliance on several nights). Given what he's capable of bringing and what he means to the franchise at this pt, I wouldn't part with Avery. But again, I'd let go of Gilroy, and maybe some other combination of players to clear cap space, plus a second rd pick, to get this guy. We can always buy him out 3-4 yrs down the line, when the $2 million hit won't be as big a burden as it is now. Plus, Savard used to be a Ranger. We never should've traded him.
Bottom line: If he can be a number one center @ $4 million, that's a deal. Remember, he got blind sided last year on a bullshit hit, resulting in a concussion. His pt total from the prev. 4 years goes as follows: 97, 96, 78,88. and last year, a lost season by his standards, he had 33 pts in 41 games - not bad. I'd say that's pretty good value. Those last 3 years were at Boston, where they haven't exactly had a sniper at the Gaborik/Kovy level. This guy is being valued at an all time low right now, a time when you buy. Honestly, I think if they can make it work, the downside is somewhat limited.
Kevin, I implore you to reconsider your original analysis as I have, and revisit this issue in another post. GUYS, Lundqvist and Gaborik are in their prime. 3-4 years from now when our younger core is finally playing at the top level, these guys (esp. Lundy) will be almost on the decline. The time to contend for a cup w/ Gabby and Hank is now (although our cap issues remain a serious hindrance-this is well-documented and becoming cliche) thru the next 4-5 years. That's our horizon. Having a player like Savard during that period at $4M per is a sound move IMO.
...p.s. I realize all this contradicts my first post.
I'd be willing to part w/ Prospal and Gilroy or Gilroy and White/another player...
--all assuming we are waiving Redden
hell no on savard. that would be beyond ridiculous with that cap hit for 6 or 7 more yrs. and to plan on a buyout of savard in 3-4 yrs is just dumb
