Workhorse Lundqvist = No Playoff Success

Dustin Burfiend at Mile High Hockey takes a look at the lack of playoff success for workhorse goaltenders in the NHL.

Henrik Lundqvist's playoff failures are mentioned for the 06-07, 07-08, 08-09 & 09-10 seasons when 'The King' started at least 69 games each of those seasons.

Burfiend makes this startling discovery during his research...

"No goalie who started more than 64 games in the regular season has ever won a conference final game since the lockout!"

...wow if this isn't example #1 as to why Biron needs to get 20-25 games this season I don't know what is.

Completely agree with the sentiment of the article, however I still don't see Biron getting anything north of 10-12 starts. Ideally, much like you say Kevin, I'd like to see Biron starting closer to 20 if possible, but Torts goes to Lundqvist by default in must-win situations... which for the Rangers is pretty much every game.

Auld should have had more starts at the tail-end of last season, but again, by default, Torts only trusted Hank down the stretch. I still believe that it was only down to Hank being - obviously - gassed during the Flyers shootout that we didn't get the extra point. If he'd have played a few less games previously then he might have gotten the win there.

Not that it'd have mattered anyway, as again he'd be too tired to go at 100% in the PO's. They need to trust a back-up goalie, that's all.

Biron could end up being the most important signing of the off-season. It is imperative that he play, and play well. Lundqvist has proven that he can carry the team, but at what expense? He was burnt out by the end of the season and the playing time had taken a toll on his health. If Biron pulls his own weight, then we have a much better shot at the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see how Brion will play for a better team then the 'Team that shall not be named'. Maybe he will have more motivation, and will push harder then he did last year. Depending on his first few games will determine how many games he will start. I think he will have a GAA of about 2.70

Enjoy Marty Biron! He's your problem now!

Heh, yeah, we will. And you enjoy DiPietro, forever, and ever, amen.

Wait. Now that I consider it, the best place for a "franchise player" is in the press box, since it is the best place for him to schmooze reporters there and become the face of the franchise. Brilliant! I apologize for my former sarcasm.

Andrew, because it's just too easy.

If I were an Isles fan, i would be Anonymous, too.

henrik has to play no more than 65 games next yr in regualr season. simple as that. no excuses. and biron should get a mix of all teams including throw away games like 3 rd in 4th night at pitt. we'd lose either way and henrik absolutely has to have more rest.

I'm torn. I know the Rangers probably won't have much chance with a tired Lundqvist, but Biron was so bad last season even with considering the team around him. Hopefully, he recaptures some of his past magic or the team replaces him quickly with Chad Johnson

"Biron could end up being the most important signing of the off-season..." Totally true. I get depressed thinking about how hard Lundqvist works to keep this team within one goal EVERY night combined with the fact with the Rangers have scoring issues.

This team is nothing without Lundqvist.

U guys honestly believe that Biron will play better bc he's on the Rags instead of the Isles? We're talking about a man who requested a trade to one of the worst teams in recent history, the 06-07 Flyers. He's was looking for an opportunity last summer and he was looking for an opportunity this summer as well. Not to mention that he is a professional. He won't play better for u just bc he feels ur a better team. Marty played his heart out for the isles but just wasnt good. Our offense and defense wasnt good enough. BUT NEITHER IS YOURS! ENJOY!!!!!!!!

anonymous - do us all a favor and just end it. but don't take anyone else with you when you do. your pathetic life will not be missed. wendys will just hire someone to replace you. so would be win-win

Wendy's? I'm an orthopedic surgeon, jackass. I make more money in one day than you do in a week. But nice try.

LI Joe said...

yeah and i'm king of england.

no orthopedist would waste time trolling on another teams board using the language you do.

yes i'll have fries with that. now clean some tables ok.

An orthopedist who cares about his team and enjoys provoking the most immature, dick-wad fans in all of sports would most certainly spend his time on blogs "trolling" on other teams. And yes I am a well respected orthopedist in the Long Island community, so why don't you shut your mouth before I shove my Oyster Bay home and my Chevy Camaro up your ass.

first clean the tables then sweep the floor someone just spilled their soda. ok mr orthopedist. or mr troll whichever name ya want to go by

I consider myself very fortunate to have the job I have. Why must you insult Wendy's anyway? People who work there are doing the best they can and work hard to earn their money. Perhaps it is the best they can do? There is no shame in working, no matter where you work. Why can't dirtbag Ranger fans comprehend that?

LI Joe said...

hey i'm glad you feel that way. not all are blessed with the ability to d harder jobs. so if your destiny is cleaning tables even at your middle age doing the work of a 17 year old so be it. one piece of good news doctor - is that your skills are transferable so when the isles move to kc you can easily move there and do your job there. i mean the real job at wendys not the imaginary doctors job.

Ok. I didn't major in orthopedics at Cornell University. I do not own a practice on Long Island. You win Ranger fan, whatever you say. If it makes you feel better.

LI Joe said...

ok troll. let me know your name and where you practice. because people with the qualifications you just listed frequently troll on other teams boards. and just on the off chance you are telling the truth i'd like to know who the hell you are so i avoid you like the plague and my friends and family to avoid you too. the thought of you operating on anyone is chilling

if its wendys your working at though let me know that one too. so i can tell your boss why the tables aren't being cleaned on time. you're spending your time trolling hockey boards instead of doing your job.

How about this instead...RANGERS SUCK, ISLANDERS ARE GOING TO KICK THEIR ASS THIS SEASON! GOODBYE
