Dolan's Made A Lot of Dumb Moves with the Rangers

In the wake of the Knicks re-hiring Isiah Thomas as a team consultant, Justin Terranova at the New York Post takes a look at James Dolan's top 10 dumbest moves including these with the Rangers...

9. Hiring Bryan Trottier to be Rangers coach — Why stop at insulting your own fan base when you can take down two at the same time? Dolan and GM Glen Sather hired the former Islanders great to coach the Rangers before the start of the 2002 season. Islanders fans considered Trottier a traitor, Rangers fans simply called him a failure. After 54 games, Trottier was canned with a 21-26-7 record.

6. Rangers’ awful spending — Though Sather certainly deserves his fair share of the blame on these, Dolan had a say in the signings of Wade Redden, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury, Eric Lindros and Pavel Bure. All were big-money busts on Broadway.

3. Keeping Glen Sather — There’s no other way to say it: Glen Sather had a brilliant career with the Edmonton Oilers, winning five Stanley Cups in seven years. He served as GM and president and stepped in as coach on several occasions. But he left his ability to make solid decisions north of the border and has presided over a mediocre period of Rangers hockey. The signings listed above serve as proof, along with the fact the Rangers have yet to make it out of the second round of the playoffs since Sather took over in 2000. The "Fire Sather!" chants will continue at MSG.

...the Trottier coaching experiment was so awful I've actually removed it from my mind so whenever it's brought up I always forget it happened. Man that was brutal.

...of those three the worst is obviously keeping Sather. I don't care how good of an offseason he's having this year or that the Rangers have been drafting well recently, two playoffs series wins in nine years should be grounds for immediate firing.

Ugh god I totally forgot about Trottier. Bad enough he won cups with the Islanders but with the Pens too! Damn, what a middle finger.

The fact is 10 years down the road and Sather has delivered nothing. We are no closer to the cup now then when he started. Like his later years at Edmonton he seems to be happy just making the playoffs, and we could not even do that last year.

Have the Rangers been drafting well recently? I think it's too early still to tell. The only 100% successful first round pick they've had is Marc Staal. The others are still unknowns. The only saving grace has been the late round picks

sather and the tail end of smith were much worse at the draft table than anything. i tried to field a rangers drafted team last yr (excl last yrs college guys) and the results at forward were dismal to say the least.

This is so depressing. And no matter how much we beg for Sather to be fired, Dolan's not going to fire him. Isiah's offenses were much worse, and the public pressure to fire him was much greater, and look how long he lasted. And now he's back! Unbelievable.
