Avery Needs to Make Sure He is Playing Hard

In Arthur Staples column in Newsday today on Russian players still choosing the NHL over the KHL, he has a small item on Sean Avery which includes this quote from the Rangers agitator...

"It was about a 2-3 week stretch right before I got hurt that I was playing the way I'm supposed to play, the way I have played," Avery told Newsday this week. "We just have to show up this year and make sure we're playing hard, that I'm playing hard."

...this is the second time this week Avery has talked about getting back to his old self (first was with Frolov on Knicks Night Live) which is good news for the Rangers and their fans and bad news for the rest of the NHL.

...what do you think? Will Avery go back to his old self this year?

I was a little surprised that ESPN had Avery as the #4 agitator of all time, but then when I watched the video I was like, "yeah, he should def be in the top 5".

The fact is that the NYR play better when Avery does his thing.

He gets inside people heads and gets them off their game. It's a good system now - Avery pisses people off, they snap, Boogard comes in and fights (allowing Avery to stay on the ice and agitate) - this allows the goal scorers to do their thing.

Avery rules!

Agreed. Could even become a lite version of the Broad Street Bullies. Clarke riles them up and Schultz takes them down. Boy, wouldn't THAT be something to see!...

not sure what the deal is with Avery and Torts. I mean, the numbers don't lie: when Avery is playing his game, the Rangers win more.
The thing is, Avery has a lot of skills. Sometimes his abilities are overshadowed by the agitator role and people don't always realize he's a really great skater with good hands who can see the ice. I think Torts wants to take advantage of all that stuff but seems like Sean was reined-in a little tight at times last year.
I'm looking forward to seeing the old agitator. At the same time, I'd like for him to score more than 15 and get a little closer to 20 goals this year.

i like that idea ken.

i agree ag, he does have skills. i loved that game against dallas where he just dominated play. i just LOVED that dallas was paying 1/2 of his paycheck for that game. douche bags.

I don't buy the fact that Torts reigned in Avery- if that was the case then he should be saying I hope that Torts lets go of the strings so I can play my game instead of what was actually said: that there was a 2-3 week period where he was playing the way he is supposed to play and that we just have to show up this year and make sure we are playing hard, that I am playing hard.
Considering last year was a disaster for Avery one would hope that he shows up this year. Agree that his skill set is pretty decent when he applies himself.

Avery needs to shut his mouth and play the game. Enough bashing other players girlfriends and making racist comments towards other coaches and players. Someone should kick his ass and knock him out of the lineup for a long period of time. I hope that someone is 1 or all of the following.
a. Trevor Gillies
b. Matt martin
c. Jeremy Yablonski
d. Zenon Konopka

haha wow at the islander post above me...

looks like averys under the fans skin as well..gotta love it.

fyi islanders fans...avery is NOT an enforcer, so why would he be fighting someone whos 6'2 and 200 pounds? you guys constantly call avery a coward yet you want your big guys to pound him? rethink your statements and figure out who the real coward is.

if teams are dumb enough to fall into averys antics..its their own damn fault.

how about a legit heavey weight fight against boogard? sean has been more then willing to drop his gloves with people in his size class. plus avery is much more effective then any of those guys you just listed. thats a crappy trade-off for us...gillies? the guy plays 4 minutes a game.

Trevor Gillies - 6 ft 3, 215 pounds
1 assist in 14 games last year

Matt martin- 6 ft 2, 192 pounds
2 assists in 5 games last year

Jeremy Yablonski - 6 ft 1, 235 pounds, 1 game played in the NHL

Zenon Konopka - 6 foot, 211 pounds, 5 points in 74 games played last year.

and then Mr. Avery..5'10, 195, 31 points in 69 games on an off year.

tell me exactly why sean would want to fight these no namers? they clearly arent in his weight class and contribute NOTHING offensively... and for being an islander fan...does the name steve webb come to mind?

basically sean avery without any sort of hands. quit pissing and moaning.

and you dare say sean needs to shut up and play the game? right back at ya!

Matt Martin is a no-namer? We'll see. Kid had 2 assists in his NHL debut and scouts are calling him the next Milan Lucic. And I do play the game. And I do so without making derogatory and racist comments towards coaches and players..

Oh and by the way, Boogaard is as close to a no namer as you can get in this league. When would he ever be on the ice with Avery? He holds the record for games without a goal right now. He'll get his 2 minutes a game while Avery plays 10-15. Get real. It's not gonna be a tandem. Shelley can play the game and he proved that last year... but Glen "Jackass" Sather let him go because of "age". Yes, 34 is such an old age. Avery doesn't get under my skin nearly as much as jackasses like Dubinsky and Callahan who think their tough.
