With NHL11 being released today, Jesse Spector at the Blueshirts Blog asked some Ranger players about their thoughts on video games...
Marty Biron said...
“The Sega Genesis, with NHL 94 and 95, it was great,” he said. “Now, they’re so complicated, with all the dekes and moves and stuff. It used to be three buttons - A, B, C. So simple. You could do backhand one-timers and you could score. … If you played, you said, ‘OK, let’s make a deal,’ and you weren’t allowed to do the trick goals. My brother and I made a whole season. You couldn’t play a season (on the system), so my brother and I used the old typewriter and printed a whole season, and I think he had Calgary and I had the Kings, and we played every team twice. It was a lot of fun.”
...i am 100% with Biron on this. Maybe it shows my age, but nothing is better than NHL94 on Sega Genesis. Just ask Vince Vaughan.
I almost fell off my chair with Todd White's answer...
"The Nintendo one where you could pick a short, fat guy, a medium guy or a skinny guy - Ice Hockey, that’s the one,” White said. “The big guy, whenever you’d hold the button down, the puck would bounce back and forth, end to end to end to end. Ice Hockey was my favorite.”
...i used to play that Nintendo hockey along with Blades of Steel all the time when I was a kid. Those games were ridiculous.
Love the idea. I'm down to get in on an EA Sports Hockey League team. Already picked up NHL 11 so I'm ready to go. Gamertag: Blazenugitz. Lemme know if you get it together.
Awesome, my bro & I had so many fights over glitch goals! He was always Calgary & I was the Rangers, Gartner 22 was deadly!!! Unfortunaly that little bitch Fleury used to shred my D :(
this is hilarious... i'm only 25, but remember that Nintendo game T. White's recounting as probably the first video game I ever played, and f-ing loved. Just ordered NHL 2011. That franchise has really taken the gameplay to another level on 360...but there's still a lot to be said about earlier incarnations
Rene: What are you doing? You promised me breakfast. Brodie: Breakfast, shmreakfast. Look at the score, for Christ's sake. It's only the second period and I'm up 12 to 2. Breakfasts come and go, Rene, but Hartford, "the Whale," they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime."

But NHL 10 and 11 are so freaking realistic and if you are unemployed and play as much as I do then you get good at the dekes and spins it's way more fun.
for Genesis, NHL '96 and '97 were the best years as far as gameplay. For '97 I would go with Leetch and Graves (big shot) on the blue line with Mess, Kovalev and Nemchinov up front.

I play alot of NHL on 360 and it would be amazing if the readers of the blog could have a team with serious players to play vs. others
Im in college still. NHL rules my life. Got 11 yesterday and very dissapointed with MZA 68 overall.
ice hockey and blades of steel were the best, and that clip from swingers is one of my top 5 favorite movie scenes haha
Why I love this blog - Swingers = top 5 favorite movies ever. "In NY, trouble finds you"
NHL11 is hot except, yes, MZA is trash and teeny tiny.
Nothing will ever top sega, though. Larmer!
throw up your 360 gamer tags, lets go!
My tag is rin9. I mostly play be a GM but ill take challengers.
my 360 tag is: L PHALANX L
Im just playing through the Hockey Ultimate Team now. I LOVE the gameplay additions/tweaks for this iteration of the series.
Blades of Steel and Ice Hockey are classic!
DA ZICHUAZHIN. my stepsons a jersey shore fan, what can I say?
Keep the tags coming, we can set up an NHL11 online league.
"This place is dead anyway" swingers is one of the best plus old school nhl is a classic and still a sick game but nhl11 is so fresh
"This place is dead anyway" swingers is the shit. Old school nhl was the shit and still is but nhl11 is so fresh.

I agree; Sega was the shizz.

TAKING ON CHALLENGERS: Xbox: Slick Dillznick

Love the Mallrats references.
