THN Names Messier #2 All Time Power Forward

The Hockey News lists their top 10 all time power forwards and ranks Mark Messier #2. Cam Neely is named #1.

2. Mark Messier
Six-time Cup winner second in all-time points.

Other former Rangers who appear on the list are Tim Kerr (10), Kevin Stevens (8), Eric Lindros (5) and Brendan Shanahan (4).

...Messier was really the only one of these guys who was in his prime with the Rangers. The others were on the back end of their careers.

...man do you remember Kerr on the Rangers? That was strange. I hated him on the Flyers.

How many points did Neeley score? How many Cups did he win? Great player but better than Mess? Ridiculous.

Loved Cam Neely but was he better than Mess? NO WAY!!! Mess won two cups without Gretzky and the other Oilers by putting teams on his back and playing NASTY!

They justify putting Neely ahead of Messier by stating that Messier mainly played Center which is not a power forward position....but then they put Lindros at #5 who never played anywhere but Center. I could understand the Messier logic if Lindor were out, but as s, it doesn't make sense.

Got to go with the concensus here. No way is Mess #2, Neeley was an excellent player and the prototype power forward that everyone was measured by. But there are many measuring sticks by which Bam Bam falls short of Mess.

Mess was more than a power forward, he had many facets to his game and the power game was only one facet. In so far as playing a power game, Neely was probably better at that particular facet, but he wasn't as complete a player as Mess. As a complete player, Neely is not in Mess's class, but as a player who can play that grinding, explosive power game, Neely has a slight edge.

My son plays youth hockey and Shanahan, Brendan not Brandan, was at the rink this past weekend. I guess with his son. Nice guy. Watching the kids play and spoke with anyone who said hello.

Good point, RJ! That's a glaring omission!

How is Tim Kerr a power forward? Sorry, standing in front of the net on the PP does not a power forward make.

How do they define "power forward?" It should be someone that can skate either around, over or thru an opponent. Thats Mess, #1. Rusty said all that needs to be said.
