Carcillo Head Hunting Fallout

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy does an outstanding job going over the Dan Carcillo head hunting hit on Ruslan Fedotenko from last night.

Wyshynski's got video, quotes and links. Including this quote from Fedotenko on what referee Marc Joannette told him after the hit...

"He said I shouldn't try to avoid the hit. I mean, I was looking for the puck and trying to shoot it so I didn't even see him coming until the last second. ‘Don't duck' was his explanation."

...great job by Wyshynski putting this together. Saved me a lot of time.

...not only should Carcillo get a suspension (could you imagine if it was Avery throwing that hit. He would have been suspended before he got to the locker room after receiving a game misconduct) the ref needs to get one as well for that ridiculous comment.

Here's video of the hit...

At the very very least, a charging call shouldve been made because that piece of crap carcillo left his feet to hit feds, whats the point of having 2 refs on the ice if theyre both incompetent, this play happened right in the middle of the ice, everybody in the world saw it was dirty except the 2 retards that mattered, both the refs should be suspended indefinitely, shoulda been a 5 minute major, now while the rangers played like crap last night, when youre playing against the refs it doesnt make it any easier, and its not only this play, there were many other calls in this game that were headscratching, i mean cmon the boogeymans "slash" on shelley, that was a lovetap at most!!

the NHL should handle its refs like the NFL handles theirs

in fact the NHL should handle their league like the NFL handles theirs

BS on the referee. Carcillo leaves his feet to deliver a hit to where the principle point of contact is an elbow to the head. How do you not call that. Then to suggest that the player needs not to duck? when he wasn't ducking but reaching in trying to control the puck after whiffing on the 1st shot. Some refs need to find another line of business.

Did the Flyer announcer actually say that was a clean good hit?

Yes. The Flyers announcer called that a "good hit" like the complete dumbass that he is. Yes it should have been a penalty, and yes the ref should face disciplinary action for the comment he made to Feds. Carcillo should get a suspension—6 games at least.

The NHL definitely needs to crack down on it's refs. They get paid more per year (not per game though) than any other group of refs in sports, and on average they suck the worst. The system should have a three strike rule. Three non-calls on double minors or majors should result in immediate suspension or dismissal.

Carcillo might have had a hard time avoiding the hit, but he could have taken a knee and prevented an extremely dangerous hit. If the league doesn't take action it'll just be another disgusting mark on its track record.

Its the flyier announcers what do u expect....outta all the games I've watched. The ranger announcers. Are by far the fairest. Carcillos is a tool, atleast prust beat the piss outta him. And your 100% right if it was avery he wouldn't of been able to finist the game.. the nhl would probably make him take anger management class this time ...freakin joke

I am a die hard ranger fan and I think. Carcillo is a totally dirt bag....
However, I actually think this hit was ok...

While it ended up being a elbow to the head, his elbow looked to be down... Fedetenk look to be falling back when the hit was coming which led to an elbow to the head...

Now, I am looming at the replay on my phone, so would lime to see it on a bigger screen.... But for now I think the elbow looked down

I agree with the earlier post, the refs were crap last night. Stahl gets called for boarding for a good hard check, the slashing call on Boogs was ridiculous, Cally got thrown headfirst into the boards and got no call, Fedo takes an elbow to the head on a cheapshot and no call. WTF!

My biggest complaint is this, why again, just like with gabby, didnt somebody grab the f**er and beat the crap out of him???

is the announcer serious? what a shit show with the refs and the announcer.

I agree with Kevin on the post. If Avery threw that hit he's gone for the game. he left his feet and hit him right in the head! How is this not a penalty??
At the very least Prust took care of him and Boogarrd earned his pay too - His hits were clean and brutally hard but the players saw them coming and he did not hit anyone in the head or leave his feet.

Yeah,I mean right now, not later, Boyle was right there, grab carcillo by the hair and dance on his face, MDZ was there too but he was probably planning his next turnover.

I didn't watch the game, so this video is the first I've seen of the incident. Two observations:

1.) Carcillo is standing there while Fedortenko is on the ground and every Ranger on the ice is just standing there w/ his jock in his hand. Doing nothing. Why isn't someone roughing him up? WTF is it about Carcillo? I don't care if Boogaard gets into 17 fights in a game--this team is not tougher until the rank and file players are willing to kick someone's ass in this situation.

2.) The Flyers' announcer actually said that was a good clean hit?!? Really?

I still dont have a problem with this hit....

Fedetenko had his head down, and was falling, which is why he caught an elbow in the head, instead of the chest....

My opinion GOOD HIT!!!!

My opinion: CARCILLO LOVER!!!!

fleisch14,

You just have posted the dumbest comment on the history of this blog, congratulations. If you cannot see how Carcillo made no attempt of tucking his elbow in to avoid Fedotenko's head then you must be blind. Carcillo was going in for a big hit which is legal and I have nothing wrong with that. The problem here is Carcillo had plenty of time to realize the hit was not there because Feds was falling down. Instead he continued to hit and made no effort at all to avoid hitting Feds head. Carcillo if he was smart and not a dirty player would have realized this and just simply stole the puck.

King-
Carcillo was lining him up for the big hit, kept his elbow down, and due to fedetenko falling the elbow made contact with his head....
This is the Flyer vs Rangers, probably one of the most physical series' in hockey....When you have a chance to make a huge hit, you drill the guy!!! Your asking these guys to make adjustments in split second time...not going to happen...Its no different then a guy on the boards turning his back at the last second and then getting hit from behind...

And my vision is 20/15 thanks to lasik

fleisch14,

Your vision is irrelevant since it's on video. There is no distance for you to be nearsighted from.

I'm an amateur skater and I could have avoided that hit.

Carcillo's feet left the ice. That's a penalty by itself, regardless of the elbow. His elbow also was far from down. He actually was lifting it as he made the hit. Watch the video carefully with the sound on mute, because no matter how good your eyes apparently are, the announcer is clearly swaying your opinion.

fleisch14 said...

No call was made....lets see if he gets suspended...

I dont think he should have tried to avoid the hit...I think he should try to lay him out in a clean way....my thought is, that it was clean...i watched the video over and over and still believe had fedetenko not been falling the elbow would not even come into question....
this is Rangers Vs Flyers, these guys try to make the big hit every chance they can, I dont think anyone in this game would try to avoid making the big hit when the chance presents itself....

Ryan, don't waste your breath on this guy. He has obviously never played ice hockey so he has no idea how easy it is to control your body out there. These are professional athletes and Carcillo made a poor decision. The hit just was not there. As stated before he even left his feet. When I used to play I didn't throw a hit just to throw a hit its not smart hockey. Like I said before the BETTER play would have been to take the puck and start skating the other way. Fedotenko was already falling down and had no chance on the play.
