Rangers Sign Stepan

Update, 4:40 p.m.:
Larry Brooks at the New York Post is now reporting that the Rangers have signed Stepan...

"The Post has learned that Stepan, the Rangers' second-round (51st overall) selection in the 2008 Entry Draft, has agreed to terms on a contract that, per the collective bargaining agreement, cannot be registered with the NHL until July 1. It will be a three-year Entry Level deal expected to be close to the $875,000 base salary cap."

...welcome to the Rangers captain of the future.

Original Post @ 2:48 p.m.:
The Minnesota Hockey Journal tweeted this earlier today...

Look for Hastings native & World Jr Championships star Derek Stepan to leave Wisconsin & sign with the New York Rangers soon.less than a minute ago via Seesmic

...Sather said to Brooks on Sunday that he wanted to sign Stepan so it looks like its coming.

...if true, I'm really looking forward to seeing the kid at camp. I don't think he has a shot at making the opening night roster, but if he tears it up down in Hartford and the Rangers center position remains unclear Ranger fans may see him called up at some point this season.

...with this possible signing you have to wonder if Wisconsin teammate and Ranger property (via Gomez trade) Ryan McDonough is next.

Man, the future of this organization is looking really good. I truly hope Sather doesn't screw it up.

This is good news as he should hopefully be hitting his stride in 2012/13 when Drurys contract is up.

On that note, that is also when Rozivals contract is up so let's hope we can hold onto Mcdonagh as well! These guys will be 23 & 24 respectively when camp opens that year.

As a student at University of Wisconsin well be missing this kid on the ice, but as a ranger fan I'm loving the youth movement. Keep up the good work Kevin.

brooks indicated he might go to juniors rather than ahl.

a few others expire in next 2 yrs incl voros, brash and avery.

I know the Rangers want him under contract but why wouldn't they just leave him at Wisconsin if they plan on sending him to Juniors?

I thought Dubie was the future captain?

dubi will not captain this team. not after the holdout. he'd fall behind cally and staal at least on the pecking order. and next generation like stepan will pass him by on the leadership front. he also takes many games off as compared to cally and staal. and i'm talking about games he's dressed for not the ones he's hurt
