Rangers Should Be in on Horton Trade Talks

With reports that Panthers right winger Nathan Horton may be traded before next week's draft, Steve Zipay at Blue Notes says that the Rangers should be in on the trade talks.

Horton, who has three years left on a six-year, $24 million contract extension. Horton's no-trade clause kicks July 1.

Horton finished second on the team with 57 points (20 goals) this past season despite missing 17 games with a broken leg. His goal totals have declined each season since a career-high 31 in 2006-07.

...obviously I'd have to see who the Rangers would have to send over to the Panthers, but I wouldn't be against Horton coming to the Rangers.

...what are your feelings on Horton.

Horton - a streaky but underrated player. Would need good linemates to excel. Young and tough. I like

if the price will be interesting then why not? I would like to see him in the Rangers squad but only for right place.

*for right price of course ;)

I would rather have Patrick Sharp and the price would probably be better than what you'd have to give up for Horton.

horton is the exact goal scoring power foward the rangers need. If you play him on a line with gaborik you have a bonified top line.

I love his work ethic and intensity. the guy can hit, skate pass, shoot, defend.....he is the kind of player that is solid across the board.

I like Horton but would hate to give up a member of our core. I would actually not be opposed to trading some of our draft picks for Horton or another proven younger player. Let's face it, what percentage of our first round picks have worked out for us over the last few years? I think we only have two Ranger first round picks on roster right now (Del Zotto & Stall). We could probably get more for a high pick now than a Korpikoski or Sanguinetti two years from now (and those are some of our better picks.)

I also hope that some people on this blog appreciate my restraint on the previous post by not mentioning all the other first rounders. I don't want to live in the past & also don't have that kind of time.

i'd rather trade dubinsky than our 1st rd pick this yr. especially since we're number 10.

Id take both he and Patrick sharp..I do have one questionthat I think should be attented to here..aren't nhl clubs allowed to be over the cap up until october prior to the regular season when rosters are finalized..if that is the case wouldnt that mean the rangers can sign kovalchuk and send Redden and Rozival to Hartford ..?? to me the keys to a successfull off season include the resigning of Prust and Shelley the acquisiton of Sharp and KOvalchuk.. hell Id also take a guy like Burish as well.. and a couple of Solid Dmen a la Willie mitchell and Henrik Tallinder.. I think by managing the Redden situation accordingly and ridding ourselves of Rozival.. Drury could also be part of a package that perhaps a team like the Avs would be willing to take on.. maybe get a john micheal lyles or a Scotty hannan with a few young players going back and fourth ... hell Id even like Peter Mueller to be part of that deal...

Chef, we appreciate the restraint b/c nobody wants to relive those draft picks.

Yes Anonymous (how about a name next time) the Rangers could sign every free agent they want this offseason as long as they get down below the cap before the season starts.

limit is 10% above cap during summer. they won;t send both r and r down - tops likely one of them likely redden. and drury has full no movement so umlikely he'll be traded since he'd have to ok it

Thanks for cap info Joe. I wasn't aware there was a 10% limit.
