Rangers to Gain $2 Million in Cap Space

TSN reports that the NHL Players' Association has voted for a five percent increase in the salary cap for next season.

The current cap of $56.8 million is expected to rise to roughly $59 million.

...Sather and the Rangers getting a little reprieve from past mistakes that have hamstrung the team financially.

will $2Mil effect the Rangers THAT much? What can they do now that they wouldn't have been able to do without the increase in cap space?

Bad news for Sather, now he has to actually pretend to do something since he has a little money to spend.

I look forward to him waiting for EVERYONE to make their moves and then him picking up the scraps with his new cap money.

3.5 for Marc Staal you have got to be joking, he maed 826.000 last season he produced a grand total of 27 points last season & is by far & away 1 of the most over rated player in the league. I can see him getting a jump to 1.5 or 1.7 but to say he merits a 2.7 million dollar raise is ludicrous. the guy is a 2nd pair defenseman & not to mention he scored 8 goals last year & had 6 goals deflect off of him into his own net due to horrible judgement around the crease.

staal should be less than dubinsky? i hope you're kidding. staal is a cormerstone of this team. defense is his position and he is the best we've got.

chi prob gets to keep one of their $ 3 mm guys now

well i think an rfas contract can only go up by a certain amount? im hoping for less then 3.5 but i figured it would be in the 3-3.5 range...

I hope this means we can sign a quality back up for Hank. I'd go with Emery. He made 1.5 mil last year & has boom/bust potential. With Johnson still in the fold I say roll the dice.

Andrew, thanks for having my back.

As far as Staal goes $3.5 is too much for me as well I would like to see $2.5 - $2.75 million.

Although I don't feel he's the most overrated player in the league, I'd like to see a little more offense from him.

I think Kevin is right on Staal. We should be realistic here. I think Staal is exactly what he is supposed to be. He wasn't the #1 or 2 overall pick. He was drafted in the teens somewhere I believe & I think he does a good job. Hopefully what Sather is finally learning is that just because you give someone a superstar contract it doesn't change who that player is. I think Drury is a good 2nd line center or a great 3rd line center. His contract doesn't "make" him a Niklas Backstrom. & I think Staal will be solid for us for a good long while, but just because we don't have a Pronger, Chara or Green doesn't mean that Staal, because he has the rarity of being successful first round pick, will be "made" into that role via his contract. Just let him play his game & don't expect him to be something he's not, because what he is is pretty good.

well then...if we sign him for 2-2.5 then the 2 million we gain will pay for him...nice

Staal a cornerstone? you just like close to everyone else is soooooo over rating this kid it's comical. Ryan Seabrook, Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Shea Weber, Mike Greene, Tyler Myers those are cornerstone type defensemen who were all drafted around the same time as Staal & there's not 1 on that list I would take Staal over. Marc Staal is a 2nd pair guy on a good team he's not a shutdown defenseman like everyone claims him to be. The guy is terribly out of position with frequency, is soft along the boards & horrible at clearing the front of net. But like always fans today fall in love with the name on the back of the jersey & forget that it's the name on the front that matters!

LTP you're right. Cornerstone, no. Serviceable #1 defenceman or above average #3 defenceman, yes. BTW, we need one of those, too. I say let's get him locked up for a little while because it's like what I ask myself about Girardi as well...If not him, who?

I have to agree also that I do not see Staal as a cornerstone. I think he has potential but he is not at that level of a Keith, Chara, Pronger, Doughty ect... If he can add some bulk to his frame without hindering his speed he will be a force on the ice. Our defense is not great but it is good enough with Hank in net. With this extra cap room I just want either a wing or a center that has the skill and mindset of Gaborik's. I would love if Zherdev came back for 3mil. Zherdev was more of a passer, he would feed Gabby very well.

I say that the rags should take a chance and sign tanguay he is a veteran and played very well with the Habs 2 years ago..with Yzerman behind the helm I find it difficult to see any scenario in which the rangers could pry Vinny from tamp but st Louis is also a very interesting target and Id love to see him in ranger blue. if this past season has taught us anything it should be that we need to get more canadian blood on this team, veterans and youngetrs alike...Big Buff woul dbe my ideal trade target but Id love to see sharpie in the blue..and i read a couple of days ago that brent burns was a possible target >>>...I say DO IT no matter what..!!!he is solid. i think with a few tweaks on the defensive side the rangers could becoem instant contenders in the east and i have faith that sather can get the job done... i myself blame wade redden for his shit play and drury for his lack of scoring and rozival for his decrease in his desire to shoot the puck ... remeber sather got us jagr for ANSON CARTER managed to dump GOMEZ, raped sutter for prust and jokinen while dumping Kotalik and HIggins, signed Gabby and drafted LUNDY STAAL and CALLY and DUBY..my boy DEL Z.. he also found a place for girardi who has been very good for an undrafted player, hopefully we can add MZA to the list as well. he brought in shelley and at the deadline and made the team far better... wwere it not for the inconsistencies of a few players the career ending injuries to pavel Bure, Pat Lafontaine the rangers would have been a contender long before recently we have seen drury become a 3rd liner who scored 37 goals the year before, redden become a minus player when he was a consistent plus player with about 50 pts a year, and rozival become scared of the shot...but we have also seen the rise of some new stars that got me excited...so come on rags fans lets be positive and look on the bright side.. maybe we are just a Messier away from a cup..although there will never be another messier :(

Just great - now we have the handicap all over again. Just when you thought it was safe that the NYR organization had no more money to spend in a foolish manner. Now the NHL and the NHLPA gave him(Slats) more money.
