Atlantic Division Gets Better While Sather Sits on Hands

Today the Rangers chances of getting back in the playoffs next season took a hit as the Devils reacquired Jason Arnott from the Nashville Predators and the Flyers acquired the rights to negotiate with Predators defenseman Dan Hamhuis, while Glen Sather could do nothing but watch as his ineptness has left the Rangers with very little cap space.

The 35-year-old Arnott, who has one year left on his contract that will pay him $4.5 million next season, had 19 goals and 27 assists in 63 games last season.

...a big, physical center. Nah, the Rangers couldn't have used him. Sure he's getting up there in age and $4.5 million is a bit much but he would have filled a need and the Rangers would have only had to commit one year.

...and not only is he someone the Rangers could have used, now when the Rangers face the Devils next season they are going to have a match-up problem with Arnott.

Hamhuis, who will probably be looking for $3 million per, had 5 goals, 19 assists in 78 games last season.

...Rangers had been linked to Hamhuis in a few rumors, but no room for him unless Sather plans on sending Redden to Hartford. The Eastern Conference Champs, if they can sign him, just got a little bit better. Again, not a good thing for the Rangers.

If Sather sends Redden to Hartford
for 4 yrs...they are still on the hook for 26Mill.even though it comes off the cap hit.
Better to buy him out at 2/3's of remaining 26Mill is 17.3Mill leaving 8.7Mill spread out over 8 yrs is a little over 1 mill per.
This way you are rid of him for good.
If they bury him and then ever have to call him up and he clears re-entry or is claimed then you
have a cap space problem that's worse.

8 yrs and almost 2 mm per yr cap hit each yr with a couple of yrs above 3 mm. much much better to send to hartford than have that insane 8 yr cap hit. and they would not bring him back although each yr they'd have to send him down again as a matter of formality

The only concerning part of this is Haimus. He's a physical monster, and that makes the Flyers blue line even more tough to crack. I'm not too worried about Arnott, he's getting very old very quickly and only makes the Devils older. Although this puts more emphasis on the Rangers to get tougher and meaner this off-season.

You're worried about Arnott? Why because the Rangers might get poked by that fork sticking out of his back?

He had 19 goals last year and he isn't getting any younger. I don't see him improving on that figure.

RJ, there are definite down sides to Arnott, but when the Rangers line up against him next year he will plop himself right in front of Lundqvist and I ask you which one of our non-physical defensemen is going to move him.?

If Rangers send Redden to Hartford he will never be coming back no matter how well he's playing down there. No need to have an 8 year cap hit.

This means philly cant bring back at least one player probably a couple. Jersey also loses some cap space and we all know kovalchuck wont be back. Not much to worry about until we start the season with nobody centering line 1.

actually if redden was grabbed on rentry waivers it would be 4 yrs or slightly less cap hit not 8. price would be 1/2 his contract or approx 3.3 mm per yr. actually better than the 8 yr deal but still not good

I'm fine with the Devils getting Arnott. This Ranger team isn't going to do any damage this season, and I'd rather let guys develop, rather than give a guy in his mid-30s $4.5 for a year.

Let's be honest, if they got him and he didn't put up the same numbers, we'd be calling for Sathers head for making the trade and losing prospects or draft picks.

With that, I applaud Glen for not doing anything. The Devils can have him, and get eliminated in the first round again like always. They really shot themselves in the foot by getting Kovy last year, and I don't think this makes them that much of a better team.

Let the horn ones have him. He will score 15-18 goals at 4.5M and you see a bargain? We can't afford to have that type of salary/production ratio. We are already swamped with non productive high contracts, aka Redden/Rozi and Dru. Its a good thing that we are going to be bringing in the kids in the next few years.
