Steve Zipay tweets...

Glen Sather on RFA Marc Staal talks: "Not a wide gap, a chasm"less than a minute ago via web

...how big is a chasm? Wonder what type of numbers have been kicked around.

...what do you think is a fair contract for Staal?

I'm sure he is bringing up Roszival and Redden's deals, and saying if they got that type of money, I want close to or around that, and in all honesty, he deserves to be paid the same as those stiffs.

In the end, I'm sure it will work out. The same thing happened a few years back with Henrik, and it all got sorted out.

can not compare a guy after 3 yrs to 2 guys in their 30's who made a hugely overpaid windfall as ufas. i see staal as future captain material - him or cally or stepan so i certainly don't want it to come to training camp holdout.

Noun 1. chasm - a deep opening in the earth's surface
abysm, abyss - a bottomless gulf or pit; any unfathomable (or apparently
unfathomable) cavity or chasm or void extending below (often used
figuratively)
gulf - a deep wide chasm
opening, gap - an open or empty space in or between things; "there was a
small opening between the trees"; "the explosion made a gap in the wall

3 to 3.5 million a season for 5 years. He isnt a superstar but he is solid and hopefully going to get better, at wich point you have to pay him more. For now I think 3 million a year is just about right.

@ ivan...3-3.5 is what i was kicking around a couple posts ago but no one seemed to think it would be that much:P

gotta look at what redden and rosi are being paid to play 3rd pairing minutes...then staal who is being overworked because of the albatross twins lack of...well...to be blunt..talent.

i also feel like after reporting a chasm away on contract talks that it would have to be more then 3.5 a year...think about it, slats wants him for probably 2-3 mill a year...a chasm of a gap? well i would have to think upwards of 4.5 mill...unless slats is trying to lowball him

What Reddenl and Rozi get paid should have nothing to do with what Staal gets in his contract.....

despite how awful Redden is, he put up exccelent numbers of many years during his time with Ottawa...Rosi also put up big numbers over his time as well....

I think 3.5 mill a year over 4 years is very acceptable and which time he will be only 27 years old can establish him self as a lock down defenseman and sign for big money!!!!

@fleish...it absolutely matters what they get paid...other players contracts are almost always brought up in arbitration. they wanna compare salary, stats and what not to figure out what they should be getting paid...

Agents will always bring up other players contracts to get the most money for their players, fair or unfair... this is what happens when a GM is an idiot. It is happening with Revis of the Jets because Al Davis is just as insane as Sather. But you always hope the player such as Staal is going to realize if he wants to win, he needs to take the reasonable contract and work hard and in 4 years he can force teams to pay him more with his play.

in arbitration ufas are not allowable to be used as comparables to a guy with 3 yrs and no leverage as rfa. so redden and rozy are not comparable, and would not be comparable in negotiations either. just because they are dramatically overapid - especially redden - in $ AND YEARS - does not impact the staal negotiations. except to give less $ to divy up under the cap.
