Sanguinetti to Go For it At Camp

Day 13 of nyrangers.com's '20 Prospects in 20 Days' brings us Bobby Sanguinetti, who says he's not going to hold back at camp this season...

Gordie Clark, Rangers Director, Player Personnel, says...

"It's a puck-moving game, the game of the future. That's what we like about Bobby, and that's what he does. He made the All-Star team again this season in the AHL. Not too many kids his age have done that two years in a row."

...i said this the other day responding to a comment on Sangs, while there is no doubt the skills are there, I'm just not sold on the kid yet. He came into camp last year very out of shape when he had a legitimate chance of making the team. Now this year he probably has less of a chance because of the numbers game.

...the only way I see him getting an opportunity with the Rangers this season is through injury to a starter.

...what do you guys think? Bust or future star?

I was excited when we first drafted Sanguinetti, people compared him to Leetch (obviously he can't be Leetch, but some parts of game drew comparisons).
He's done very well in the AHL especially this past season. However, I agree that he came to camp out of shape, and not only that, he was the one that complained the most about how hard camp was. It's either he didn't prep himself as much as he could for camp because he didn't take Torts' warnings seriously, or he just doesn't have the physical ability and stamina to handle training camp or the NHL for that matter.
I'll give Sangs another year to prove me wrong, but with the way things are looking now, he's a first round bust. He needs to have the camp of his life this September, or else we'll all be thinking about why we didn't draft Claude Giroux while he was available.

i think the kid is a late bloomer but he will be on the team next year. he has too much raw talent to be in the ahl too much longer.

It's way too early to consider him a bust even if he doesn't make the team this year. He's only 22.

I agree with Anonymous (use a name!)

It's waaay too early to give up on Sangs. Look at the Devils or the Wings, sometimes their picks don't make it until they're 24-25-26. Defense is the toughest position and puck-moving D have to be perfect in positioning and judgement. He has the tools. I think he'll come through as a player in another year or two.

I agree that it is way too early to call him a bust, I think he really missed out on an opportunity last season that may not be available to him this year.

I agree with everyone it's way too early. The last thing we want is to lose faith in him and have him dominate on another NHL team. I think it will be years from now until reaches that potential though. Unfortunately I don't think the Rangers organization will hold on to him to wait that long, whether it be through trade or the cap getting in the way. (I have this strange gut feeling).
