Remembering 1994 Canyon of Heroes Parade

As most of you saw last night on ESPN's 30 for 30 "June 17, 1994" episode, today is the 16th anniversary of the Rangers march down the "Canyon of Heroes" to celebrate their Stanley Cup Championship.

I was in third grade and my parents let me skip school to go the parade with my aunt and uncle. As the Cup passed by, I was in a crowd and couldn't see above the people in front of me. Some guy standing next to me picked me up and put me on his shoulders so I could see the float pass by. Still gives me goosebumps to this day.

Drove to Staten Island with my wife and 2 kids, met my brother and his wife at the ferry and went across. We walked up to Bowling Green and happened on the staging area for the parade. We got a curbside spot next to the float with Richter, Graves, Leetch, Messier and the Cup, which remained stationary for about a half hour. Took great pictures, talked to the guys, saw Graves draw a crossed out 1940 on the back of one of the posters that were handed out. Every few minutes, one of the guys would raise the cup over his head and the crowd would go nuts. During one of these elevations, Richter had the cup over his head and the float lurched forward a couple of feet. Richter staggered back and almost lost the cup over the side. Everyone had a grat laugh, but you could see the relief on Mike's face.
