Ersberg Name Entered in Backup Goalie Search

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes reports that Kings backup goaltender Erik Ersberg's name was circulating around the Finals as an available goaltender.

Ersberg, who earns $750,000, is a UFA after next season. He went 4-3-2, 2.40 gaa & .906 sv% last season.

...the price is right with Ersberg and I'm assuming it would only take a very late round pick to get him.

...although how much better is he than Chad Johnson? Why waste a pick when you already have a capable backup. Should be interesting to see what the Ranger line of thinking is here.

In other backup goaltending news Zipay says Patrick Lalime could be out of the picture.

Zipay also has some draft news and takes a look at the 05-06 roster vs. now.

I find the whole login to look at Newsday/Blue Motes inconvenient and annoying. Unfortunately I don't read Steve Zipay anymore. Thanks for summing up here.
I thought Chad Johnson looked pretty good. For all of the talk of staying in the organization, it seems like the backup goalie position is one place we could afford to do it.

i guess it depends if the rangers think johnson is going to be a career backup or can develop into something more.. instead of trading though why not go after a guy like Legace who played well for the hurricanes when ward went down

I'd rather not have Lalime, so I'm glad he's out of the picture. He didn't do so hot as Buffalo's backup this year. It'd be Valiquette part II.

I agree with Gary on Lalime. I'm not really excited about Ersberg either. I think he was behind Jason Labarbera on the depth chart a couple years ago in LA. If he has really improved since then and has a 2 way contract maybe that would be ok. There are probably better options around if the Rangers are going to trade a pick instead of signing a free agent.

Lalime is a perfectly good goalie. I don't see all the negative aspects you guys are talking about. Ersberg will handle the job just fine.
