"The Rangers, moments ago, finally announced the signing of goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to his new contract. The deal will run for six years and $41.25 million, or $6.875 million per. That makes Lundqvist the highest paid goaltender in the NHL, eclipsing Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo, who makes an average of $6.75 million a year.
The contract does not include a no-movement clause, meaning that Lundqvist conceivably could be sent to the minors if things went stunningly wrong. However, it does include a limited no-trade clause, which means that if the Rangers inform Lundqvist that they want to trade him, he has 24 hours to give them a list of eight teams he cannot be dealt to."
...the final numbers are actually more than was originally reported. While Lundqvist has been outstanding during his three years with the Rangers, I'm not sure he deserves to be the highest paid goaltender in the league. I know the Rangers will have a lot of cap room at the end of the season with the expiring contracts of Jagr, Shanny, Straka, Malik, Mara and Rozsival, but I would have been happier with him getting $5.875 million per. I hope this contract doesn't come back to burn them when they need to bring in a scoring winger or puck moving defenseman in the offseason.
