Today the New York Rangers (29-24-7) defeated the Buffalo Sabres (28-22-8) by a score of 5-1. Sean Avery scored the first of his two goals 10 seconds into the game, and Brandon Dubinsky had a goal and two assists for the Rangers, who chased goalie Ryan Miller in the first period and routed the Sabres. Henrik Lundqvist, in his first since signing a six-year, $41.25 million deal with the Rangers, made 29 saves. Brendan Shanhan and Ryan Callahan also scored for the Rangers. With the win, the Rangers leaped over Buffalo in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race by winning for the seventh time in 11 games (7-3-1). Avery's first period goal was the Rangers quickest at Madison Square Garden, topping Phil Esposito's goal 12 seconds in on March 1, 1978. For a full recap go to Yahoo! Sports.
...its about time we faced a goalie who didn't play like his life depended on it. And of all the goalies to play poorly against us, the guy who had such a strong playoff last year.
...not sure what Renney said during the five game break, but they came out with a purpose today. Scoring 10 seconds in obviously set the tone for the rest of the day.
...I actually didn't realize that these guys were 7-3-1 in their last 10 games. I would have thought they were playing much worse with all the trade talks, Valiquette starting over Lundqvist and the general panic in Rangerland.
...its nice to see Avery score a couple today. He's had a tough year with injuries and it would be great to see him score some important goals down the stretch.
...I have one word to describe Dubinsky - Stud.
...I think its safe to say the conditioning assignment for Callahan has worked wonders. He really gained some confidence down in Hartford and its showing. In the six games since he's been back, Callahan has two goals and is a +3. Not sure what Renney's going to do when Prucha is healthy.
...with tomorrow's game against a Western Conference team, its not a must win, but it would be nice to get at least one win against a team from that conference.
