Rangers' Trade Targets Not Available

At the New York Post, Larry Brooks reports that a number of potential trade targets for the Rangers are out of reach...

"The Post has learned that Rob Blake has told the Kings he will not waive his no-trade clause to come to New York or any Eastern Conference team. At the same time, well-paced sources report that Dan Boyle appears far more likely than not to sign a long-term extension with Tampa Bay that would remove him from the rental market.

The New York Rangers are keenly interested in Toronto's Tomas Kaberle, whom The Post has been told would waive his no-trade to come to Broadway. There is, however, no indication the Maple Leafs would move the prime-time defenseman, who comes at a bargain $4.25M per through 2010-11. And even if Cliff Fletcher would trade the 29-year-old Kaberle in order to jump-start the organization's rebuilding process, the price is likely to be steep-as in Bobby Sanguinetti, plus."

...while I'd love to get Boyle to jump start our power play, I'm not going to cry if it doesn't happen. And no way, if I'm Sather, am I trading stud defensive prospect Bobby Sanguinetti (21 goals and 35 assists in 47 games) for anyone other then Crosby or Ovetchkin.

You wouldn't trade Sanguinetti for anyone other than Crosby or Ovechkin? What about Malkin? Phaneuf? Kopitar? Either of the Sedins? There are a ton of great, proven established young players whom I and most would trade the unproven Sanguinetti for in a split-second.

While Sanguinetti seems like a nice prospect, he is still a very small and seemingly physically weak player. Depending on the other prospects, I might include Bobby in order to get Kaberle. If it's Sanguinetti, a B level prospect and a late round pick, DONE. Kaberle is one of the top 5 Dmen in the league and turns 30 in two weeks. This guy is an amazing passer, his numbers are down a bit this year because the Maple Leafs are not exactly a powerhouse, but Kaberle is still producing. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php3?pid%5B%5D=30372

This is the kinda guy who can play for another 10+ years, and with Staal, could be one of the top 3 defensive pairs for years to come.

I guess I'm just one of those guys who likes home grown prospects.

I know its only the OHL but his offensive numbers are off the charts. Once he makes the jump to the AHL, they'll bulk him up. Plus, there were plenty of criticisms of Leetch's defense before he came to the NHL and he was just fine.

So its not so much a criticism of Kaberle who I would love on this team, I just feel that Sanguinetti's ceiling is just too high to trade. Hey maybe I'm wrong and he ends up being a Pavel Brendl type bust, but I'd take the chance, hold on to him and try to develop him.
