Yeha, Staal is beginning to rub fans the wrong way with this holdout. And the guy has to be aware of this to some extent. Thus, like you guys have said, he better bring it this year to meet the heightened expectations he's setting for himself. At this point, where both sides are clearly at some sort of impasse, you wonder why they don't settle on a 2-year deal worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $8-9M. then, in 2 years time, the Rangers will gladly sign him to theRozival-esque contract he seems to think he deserves, provided he delivers a couple 35-40-pt, +10-15(+/-)seasons. that's how it should work, and you gotta think that's the front office's stance

Sather might even playing harder ball than I originally thought. a lot of sources say he's only offering 2 years $7.5. In all honesty, that is what Staal deserves. If he's rejecting an offer of $4+ per over 2-3 years, that's just absurd, the more you think about it. also, we're heading for a double dip kid. take the money and shut the f#$k up.

Or you can look at it as Slats needs to clear room for Staal. Right now the cap space is less than 500K. Does MZA make the team, if not there is 1.750M. Does White make the team at 2.375M with 4 other centers in EC AA Dru and Boyle. I think that the camp decides who stays and who goes in regards to how Slats clears up some cap room. There is no posturing coming from Staals camp so I believe both sides understand and are willing to wait. Just another way to look at it.

Besides- management already knows what type of player they have in Staal. As long as he is fit and conditioned to play it should not take long for him to develop the timing and physical aspects of playing again.

Old post, but I thought I had to respond to the comments. I haven't heard of any offers on the table, so it may not be Staal who is holding out. It is more likely that Staal's agent is waiting by the phone and Slats is playing games until he figures out how he is going to afford an offer. He can't send Redden down yet, so he may not even make an offer until camp starts. Think of the (non) negotiations with Jagr and Shanny (where Slats waffled until the last minute, then made an insulting offer), rather than Dubi's deal (which sounded more like the conflict was player-driven).

william - staal hasn't said a word and you're telling him to shut up. pot meet kettle

and defensemen who are shutdown dmen are paid for their position so 30 pts or whatever many of which are secondary assists are irrelevant

Yeah really they're not paying Staal for points they're paying him to get his mitts in Ovechkns and Cindys faces.

LI Joe - Staal is not a bonafide #1 shut down man. As good as he can be, last year his inexperience at times shone thru, and he on more than one night he was unable to "shut down" the opposing top winger in our zone. Either that guy named Henrik lundqvist came thru or we lost. He certainly could be, but he is not. He's a very good top 3 defenseman w/ a lot of defensive potential and some offensive upside, but that remains to be seen. I probably watched 90-95% of the games last year and Staal could have been substantially more "shut down" like in at least 30.

as far as whether or not this signing delay has actually anything to do with him holding out/rejecting reasonable offers, that's a good question, and perhaps I, and others, are being premature...pls forgive my oversight as a Ranger fan who can no longer stomach decent to solid/good players being paid out the ass.

as per what Rick says- I'm not entirely sure how much in excess of the cap one team can be going into camp and before the regular season, but I'm pretty sure Staal could be signed at an annual $4 million now, and as long as that's deducted elsewhere by Oct x, season opener, thru cuts, it's kosher.

thus leaving a few possible scenarios when the season begins. If MZA and T White don't make the cut, then there's Staal's contract. If they man up and demote/wave Redden(provided he doesn't blow people away with his heart and magically resucitated skillbase in camp), then there's Staal's $4 million or more. I suspect that maybe his agents are hoping the latter occurs, thus leaving more cap space to sign Staal in the ~5 M per neighborhood, which I'm not necessarily all that opposed to if he its a 5-6 year deal where we can lock him up. That said, he's not Drew Doughty offensively, puck-moving wise, or even defensively, and he doesn't enter Shea Weber's realm, and he'll likely fetch a 6-yr, ~$34 m deal. trying to think of natural comps for Staal. ???
