It's Up to the Arbitrator Now for Rangers, Zherdev

Larry Brooks at the New York Post says it's now up to arbitrator Elliott Shiftman to establish Nikolai Zherdev's contract number for this coming season, following yesterday's salary arbitration hearing in Toronto...

"And once Shiftman issues the ruling that's due tomorrow but may be postponed until Monday, it will be up to Rangers general manager Glen Sather to decide whether to accept the contract for 2009-10 or walk away from it and from Zherdev. That would allow the 24-year-old to become an NHL unrestricted free agent while also freeing him to sign a deal in the Russian KHL."

Zherdev is is believed to be seeking $4.5 million per year.

...doesn't seem like it matters what Shiftman decides. The Rangers, especially Torterella, are not interested in Zherdev's services anymore.
