Rangers & Leafs Talk Zherdev?

Steve Zipay at Blue Notes reports that the word in hockey circles in Toronto today where that the Rangers and Toronto where working on a deal for Nikolai Zherdev...

"Leafs czar Brian Burke needs scoring and has an excess of defensemen. Zherdev can put up 25-plus on the first line. although the press scrutiny will be intense.

For the Rangers, there wouldn't be a No. 1 center coming back, and realistically, Burke and the rest of the GMs can gamble that the Rangers won't sign Zherdev by tomorrow and he'll be un (sp) unrestricted free agent."

Zipay says that the Rangers haven't confirmed anything and that defenseman Ian White and forward Lee Stempniak may be two players the Rangers could be interested in.

...if Sather can turn an unwanted Zherdev into White, who would look nice on the power play, this would be another solid move in a summer full of them for the embattled GM.

I still don't understand why the Rangers won't keep Zherdev for $3.9and why everyone hates him so much. For the price he was awarded it's still a good deal. We desperately need an offensive player and he has potential of getting 30 goals and topping out around 70 points. If we trade him for a defenseman I will be sick. Unless there is some serious turmoil between Zherdev and Torts I dont know why we would trade him. I would love to see Torts turn him into the player he can be.
