Rangers Actually Have Cap Room

Dan Akeson at Blueshirt Bulletin evaluates the Rangers cap situation...

"Unlike years past, the Rangers have ample cap space left to make a move or two with a little over a month left before the season. However, while their cap is fairly flexible, they lack a good number of signed definitive roster players."

Akeson also puts together a nice chart of all the Rangers salaries.

...pretty scary going into the season with two defensive spots wide open (and no experienced player vying for that position) and no real play-making center.

...hopefully the available cap room will allow the Rangers to address these holes.

While he will be rookie this season, I am fairly sure that Matt Gilroy is going to be in our top 6. We signed him to an NHL contract for $1.75 million, which tells me that Sather is banking on him to make an impact. That means we have 1 spot available (unless by saying we had 2 spots you meant for a 6th and 7th defenseman).

I meant 5th and 6th. And just because Gilroy won the Hoby Baker doesn't make him a shoo-in to be a successful NHLer. Sure the 5th spot is his to lose, but who says he won't lose it.
