Rangers May Not Be Able to Sign Dubinsky

Wes Goldstein at CBS Sports looks at seven restricted free agents whose current teams might not be able or willing to keep them, including Brandon Dubinsky...

Brandon Dubinsky, N.Y. Rangers:

Dubinsky has struggled in his sophomore season in New York, but he's not the only Ranger who has had challenging times this season. More important, Dubinsky is only 22 and has a lot of upside offensively, something he showed last season when he played with Jaromir Jagr. Dubinsky doesn't make much by Rangers standards -- only $635,000 -- but New York already has more than $40 million committed for next season, and only nine players signed.

...while Sather was able to save face with three outstanding trade deadline pick-ups, Ranger fans will be reminded once again of the terrible contracts he's given out when the Rangers can't sign a number of key free agents this off-season including Dubinsky, Callahan, Zherdev, Antropov, Morris, Mara and Sjostrom.

Recently I'm thinking they should sign Antropov and let Zherdev go somehow. Zherdev was my favorite player the first and even last 3/4 of the season. But he looks so lost out there recently.

Maybe they let Dubie and Zherdev go for Antro. Whatever.

If another team signs Dubinsky, we should be looking at a nice compensation package, and with Anisimov waiting in the wings, and Drury and Gomez signed for the next few years...really makes you think twice about automatically assuming Dubinsky will be resigned. Maybe a draft day trade?

Antropov and Zherdev should definitely be signed, both are young (Antropov is still fairly young) and possess great skills, and probably won't demand huge contracts, due to up and down past performances. I would resign one of Mara or Morris, depending who'll take less, and Callahan. Sjostrom can be replaced from within, and hopefully a defenseman can step up and establish themselves in the top 6.

Also, anyone think demoting Naslund might be a smart route to take? From what I understand about the CBA, players signed when they are over 35 cannot be demoted (except if you are the Devils and you somehow get to demote Alexander Mogilny without repercussion), but Naslund was signed a month before his 35th birthday...that $4 million could be better used elsewhere.

If we loose Dooby, I will become the fan of whatever team he goes to, his stats haven't been phenominal this year but with the potential and the little things he does we can't afford to loose him.

I ran my own numbers a while ago, it's a long post, but the Rangers should be able to resign him. He's a 3rd line center with 9 goals so far, remember this.

I'm not plugging my blog, it's just a really long post and I don't want to crowd the comment section.

Plugs. No longer just for Jeremy Piven's scalp.

Jack, it's not a plug. If you don't want to read through the analysis, then don't. It's about a 2,000 word post, so posting it here just floods the page.
