Shanahan Moving On

In an exclusive for The New York Post, Larry Brooks reports that Brendan Shanahan has told his agent Rick Curran to explore teams other than the Rangers.

Shanahan had this to say...

"I've told Rick [Curran] that I can no longer wait and that it's time to move on," Shanahan, referring to his agent, told The Post this afternoon. "Until now, Rick has been under instructions to tell inquiring teams that my focus was on re-signing with the New York Rangers , and that I was not accepting any other offers.

"That has changed."

...this is obviously best for all involved.

...while I was a big advocate for the Rangers not re-signing Shanahan, I can't over-state what he did to help bring this franchise back from the dead. When Shanahan was a free agent two years ago he could have signed with a lot of other teams for more years, but he signed a 1-year contract with us in an attempt to revitalize this franchise. And he along with Jaromir Jagr did. For that I thank him and wish him good luck.

...here's a little video that represents everything Shanahan brought to the Rangers...

Yeah, I am definitely going to miss watching him crossing the red line 5 seconds after Gomez entered the offensive zone. Markus Naslund already almost has 1/4 of Shanahan's entire point total from last season after just 12 games. I'm glad he's moved on.

Show some respect to this dude. He had 108 points for us during his two years. (remember he missed alot of games when he had that collision with Knuble as well.) I would rather have shanny of two years ago then Naslund of now.

He is a Beauty player. Miss you Shanny.

That's fine...he was good when he played for us, not great, but good. If his name was anything other than Shanahan, people would be ripping Sather for even thinking of bringing him back. Lindros had a similar production decrease and people couldn't wait for Lindros to be gone. Ranger fans talk of Shanahan's days in NY as if he was putting up 100+ points. Fact is, the guy is a shadow of his former self, and I think we are a better team without him than with him.

Hmm....Rangers fans put many of their players on pedestals that other organizations may not, despite what the stat column shows. People talk of Messier as if he were the ultimate of all time, but fact is...he won ONE cup here, then left NYR for Vancouver stupidly, then came back. Yada, yada.

Lindros was booed by the time he was out of here.

I loved watching Shanny play. His shot was insane, not many of today's young guns, though faster through the neutral zone, can release the puck off a pass as fast as he could. A master a the dead art of the snap shot. He seemed so clutch. He was here two years and both years the team made the second round of the playoffs...come on NY, that's impressive for us. He also seemed to fit in nicely with the city and its media. Yeah he seemed slow, but it was great having a guy that would stand up to Brashere, cheer young guys, pick his own teeth up off the ice. Damn, now I wish he was on the team.
