"...there is a lot of talk among NHL GMs that the the Thrashers may look to move Ilya at the deadline. He's right. It has been going on “off the record” for about a month. It will be interesting to see who steps up. At this point it would be easier pinning down the teams that won’t, but look to the NY Rangers, Calgary and Ottawa here as the pre-pre-early favorites…"
...you would have to assume if Kovalchuk is available the Rangers would be willing to listen. But as with trying to sign a free agent, the Rangers have to think about the cap space. Not only for this year but the years ahead.
...and obviously if the Rangers continue with their winning ways there is no way I want them to bring in a player like Kovalchuk who could disrupt the current chemistry.

You know that Atlanta wouldn't even listen unless a package of young players were returned, such as Dubinsky, Staal, Sanguinetti, Del Zotto, Anisimov, Korpikoski. Kovalchuk is an amazing talent, but he's already into the latter stages of RFA, and will probably command close to 10 million, whereas all of those players I mentioned combined would not even cost 10 million. The cap is already expected to go down next season, so we will need as many cheap contracts as we can to offset the contracts of Drury, Gomez, Lundqvist, Rozsival and Redden.
NEEEEEEXXXT.
(Oh, it's "years" not "year's."
