Dark Day in the History of the Rangers As Cherepanov Dies

In what could be one of the worst tragedies in New York Rangers history top prospect Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on the bench at or near the end of Omsk's Kontinental Hockey League game and died a short time later.

Cherepanov appeared in 14 games with Avangard Omsk of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) this season, registering seven goals and five assists for 12 points. He ranked second on the team in goals (seven) and fourth in points (12). He also ranked third on the team with a 24.1% shooting percentage.

For more on Cherepanov go to Rangers Report, Slap Shots, and Ranger Rants.

Even more sadly, Beyond the Blueshirts reports that Cherepanov was named to the Russian National Team earlier today.

...my condolences go out to the entire Cherepanov family.

...in the past month it looked like Cherepanov was finally starting to grow into his talent under the tutelage Jaromir Jagr. Who, according to the Blueshirt Bulletin, was understandably distraught.

...BB also reports that 'problems getting an ambulance and working defibrillator appear to have contributed to the problem.' If that is the case an investigation needs to be done to prevent that from happening again.
