In response to a letter asking how to fix the Rangers, John Buccigross at ESPN.com gives this answer...
"Buyouts, trades or burying players in the minors are options. The Rangers can afford to put Wade Redden in Hartford if they wish for more cap relief. They could trade Chris Drury if he chose to waive his no-trade clause. What about the Islanders? They are the perfect kind of team for Drury. Drury wouldn't have to move and the Islanders get a perfect player they could use for the last two years of his contract before they have to extend deals for younger players. It is quite obvious the Rangers will, and probably should, do everything they can to sign Ilya Kovalchuk."
...while I would sign-up for this scenario in a second, this seems as likely as the Eagles trading Donavan McNabb intra-division to the Redskin...hey wait.

My only concern with this scenario is what does it mean for the core unit of young players who will also need long(er) term deals soon. Would I give up Dubi or Cally for Kovi? Sure. Would I give up Dubi, Cally, Stall, Girardi, Del Zotto and Anisimov for Kovi? That's a tougher question.
Dave, how are you going to just give up Dubs and Callahan for Kovalchuk like its nothing..Those two guys are the Heart of the team along with Avery.. i dont understand how you can just let them go like that.. And NYR Blogger. Is there an update on Callahan and Averys status for the next few games?
Hey now, I love those guys too & would hate to lose them. I've made numerous posts here about how the team needs more year over year consistency to develop chemistry, but I said Dubi or Cali, thats a big difference. Of course the best case would be to cut some of the real dead weight to give us the cap room to spend wisely. I think Kovi's extra offence would be worth a few more kids(sanguinetti, heikkenen, mcdonough) if we could somehow move on from Redden, Brashear & Rozival.
