Messier to GM the Leafs?

According to the Ottawa Sun, if the Toronto Maple Leafs fire GM John Ferguson Jr. they will be looking to hire a big name, one of which is Mark Messier...

"The talk among league executives is the Leafs won't make a move on the GM front unless they secure a big name -- such as Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman or Ron Francis, a former Leaf -- to take the reins...."

...it's no secret that Messier wants to become a GM. I would assume the Rangers are his first choice, but even he has said Sather is probably going to be around for a while (unfortunately for us Ranger fans). So if this happens, it will be a great opportunity for him to get some experience before eventually coming to the Rangers.

...on a side note man the Leafs are terrible right now.

This would be a great opportunity for Messier. If the leafs offer, I'm sure he'll take it.

I would love to see Messier behind the Rangers bench. Immediately.

You want to replace Renney. The guy has taken us to the playoffs the last two years after not being there for eight straight years. Give me a break.

I am happy with both sather and renney. Sather has benefitted from the salary cap and getting young talent in our Farm system. His only unforgivable mistake was trading Brian Leetch. Never should have happened!

You can't be happy with Sather and then say he was bailed out by the salary cap. With out the cap, Sather would still be bringing in high price no talent players. Bring back the Messiah.

Sather while th GM from Edmonton, worked miracles with a small budget. Now with the cap he is forced to use his ability to find talent at a low price, just like in edmonton, which is hi strenght. I do admit he was horrible when he first came here think he all he had to do was buy players and they would gel as a team. Since the strike he has done a great job with the team, farm system and coaching staff.

As far as Messier, he was the best leader in the history of the game and some may say best player. However, all of that does not tranlate into being a successful GM.

I don't like Sather at all. But why do we assume Messier will be a good GM? Can the guy at least be an assistant Gm before we start talking about him talking over for Sather.
