Del Zotto +/- Ends Calder Chances

Greg Wyshynski at Puck Daddy takes a look at how the Calder Trophy (Top Rookie) is shaping up and has this to say about Michael Del Zotto's chances...

"Just like Tavares can't win the Calder with Duchene leading the scoring race, Michael Del Zotto of the New York Rangers (6-22-28) can't win the Calder with Myers dominating in ice time and with Del Zotto anchored by that minus-20."

...+/- has to be the most over-rated stat in hockey. Marek Malik had a +32 in 2006-2007. Nuff said. However, Wyshynski is right, Del Zotto can't win the Calder with a -20.

Marek Malik wasn't as terrible as most Rangers diehards make him out to be and Tom Renney's defensive strategy meant the Rangers were a solid + team at even strength. Plus/minus just needs to be taken in context. If you want to pick on a stat that Wysh mentions, pick on Giveaways where he has Myers ranked 4th but neglects to mention his company (Thornton @ 3rd, Crosby @6th, etc.). High giveaways can mean a player is bad or just that he handles the puck much more as in the case of Myers, Crosby, Thornton.

+/- isn't overated at all. Its a very good display of team play and almost always the best teams have the best +/-'s and the worst teams the worst. Currently, players from Chicago, San Jose, Washington and New Jersey sport the best +/-'s

I meant more as an individual statistic. But I see your point.
