The question is whether Lundqvist will be starting against the Flyers any more often.
Valiquette has owned the Broad Street Bullies this season, shutting them out twice and beating them thrice. He’s allowed just one goal on 69 shots. And while it was completely understandable that Tom Renney did not go with Valiquette to start today, the big back-up almost certainly will get the nod in at least one of the teams’ remaining meetings March 21 and 25.
“He’s a National Hockey League goaltender in every sense of the word,” Renney said. “And who knows what lay ahead for him in terms of his participation for us moving forward.
“Henrik’s our No. 1 guys, there are no two ways about it. But he’s established himself as a very good backup goaltender in this league. And I think he could do that for any team in it.”
...when Renney says "who knows what lay ahead for him in terms of his participation for us moving forward" to me that means he's going to get some important starts down the stretch.
...I can't imagine that Valiquette doesn't get to start the two remaining games against Philly. The only reason Renney might not give Vally the start in both games is that they are back-to-back games (3 off days in between) and Renney might not want to keep Lundqvist on the bench for that long.
...with 16 games left in the season, I wouldn't mind seeing Vally get about 3-4 starts.
