On what Eminger brings to the Rangers...
"With the Rangers, Eminger is a prime insurance policy. If the Rangers can't come to an agreement with restricted free agent Marc Staal (a worst-case scenario), decide to bury Wade Redden in the minors or merely want competition for Matt Gilroy, Eminger is capable of filling a variety of roles on the Rangers' blueline."
...oh god, please don't even mention that the Rangers might not come to an agreement with Staal.
...i've seen a lot of Ranger fans say the Eminger move means an end to Redden. I don't believe that for a second. Eminger will be down in Hartford and called upon when needed for injury replacement or veteran presence (McDonagh or Gilroy struggling).

I thinks its just to early to decide what his role is gonna be. I definitely thinks its a solid depth pick up for us. Also we don't know how gilroy and mcdonough are going to perform in camp either, and same goes for redden. wouldn't even be surprised if redden will be our 7th defensemen this year. There's no doubt that if he starts out on the rosters and continues his downward play he will be sent down or benched for multiple games at a time
I think Redden's either playing or he's in Hartford. No reason to have $6.5 million setting in the press box as a seventh defenseman.
Nothing would make me or any other ranger fan to see him in hartford, I still think we're stuck with him one more year then next year we bury him and take a run at thorton or richards. I saw a good post on hockeybuzz where someone suggested a trade for richards, wed send rosival and a pick or a prospect. Still would be over the cap but not impossible to make another trade or demotion for space. Richards would be a free agent after this year and there is a good chance we could sign him and rosival would do good in dallas, he's not a bad defenseman think he needs a change in scenary plus he's only got two years left
kevin - i'm not sure but i don't think eminger would be sent down and then recalled except maybe late in season. i think he's subject to waivers in either direction and the on the way back its 1/2 price waivers and we can't afford that. maybe in march we could with less of season left but not earlier. so i see him kept as 7th man or if sent down kept down most of season.
I agree that Redden is either playing in the NHL or in the AHL. There's no reason to have him on the roster if he's not going to play. He's not necessarily bad for a 3rd pairing guy. Most teams would take him as their 5,6,7th defenseman depending on their situation. He's bad in relation to his salary. So if he's on the roster, he's playing, albeit playing a back of the rotation role.
Once he's in the AHL, he's there for the season. A $3 million plug in defenseman would not be such a bad option for a team hurt by injuries so it would be too risky to put him on re-entry waivers
I can't see the Redden to AHL. I have no idea where Eminger fits into this blue line mess. I watched Eminger play for Tampa and I was not impressed with his play at all. There is a reason why he has played for 5 teams in 7 years and is paid 750K/yr. Maybe he is insurance for McD or Gilroy when they struggle and need to sit in the rafters for a spell.
