Rangers Interested in Richards, Madden; Could Target Parise Next Year (Updated)

Update, 1:33 p.m.:
Gross clarifies that the interest is on Madden's end not the Rangers.

...good this team has enough 3rd and 4th line players.

Original Post:
In a post on how the Ilya Kovalchuk signing could effect the Rangers, Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants says the cap situation Kovalchuk will put the Devils in next year could have them choosing over the Russian Superstar and Zach Parise (who will be an RFA next offseason) and feels the Rangers should pounce.

...as Gross states, it's all dependant on if the Rangers can afford him (ie Redden to Hartford). But could you imagine the Rangers stealing him from the Devils?

He also offers these two rumors...

"For obvious reasons, the Rangers are linked with the Stars’ Brad Richards but the ex-Lightning is slated to make $7.8 million in the final year of his deal. Veteran ex-Devil UFA John Madden has also been said to be on the Rangers’ radar."

...if the Rangers are truly dedicated to a youth movement they will stay away from each of these two. Plus Rangers can't afford Richards this year even after sending Redden down to Hartford. Unless Dallas is willing to take Drury and Redden in return. Yeah right.

Damn, Richards' contract seems pretty insane...I'll pass on both.

This year is the final year, but still.

one is a huge cap hit (even if it is for one year), and the other is an older player, which although Madden can win some big face offs, there really is no use for him in NY. Can you imagine stealing Parise away from NJ???! That would help clear up some hard feelings of passing on him in the draft.

BORING PLAYERS....ZZZZZZ....

Haven't we learned our lesson yet about picking up current or former Devils? And Richards contract is so insane it almost (almost) makes Redden's look decent.

no thanks on any of those guys. lets just take our medicine and get a hopefully top 5 pick this yr

would love parise as ufa but not as rfa all those picks to give up - could be 4 number 1 picks if $ are enough so big no thanks to that

Man I really am sick of watching everyone around the Rangers get better whil ewe stagnate into nothing and waste king Henriks best years.. I mean common do we really thing our youngsters are going to carry us to the cup..??? give us a Kane, toews, or crosby , ovechkin draft pick and ok i might believe but common..even zherdev at 2 mil is an upgrade and look where he landed .. common this is almost pointless to watch anymore...Richards..are we kidding!!!!!!!!!!!

madden=cheaper version of drury...

too bad we have drury

To me, obtaining Richards makes the most sense. Players have a tendency to play their best hockey in the final year in their contract. There are exceptions of course, and there is a price to pay for the gamble, but in general, players want to up their value. So a trade with Dallas could potentially have a high return. Today, most players are awarded a big contract for what the did (past tense). What is Redden's incentive to play hard or hit hard. If anything, his incentive is to play safe and smart so he can save his star performance or a physical game for the final year of his contract.

drury did score 20-25 goals his 1st 2 yrs here.

anonymous - and what would richards give us. 4th in our division ahead of isles instead of last. we are not cup contenders with or without richards and i'd rather get a better draft pick and not give up a prospect. also no temptation to resign hin to long term cap killing deal

how is the NHL even allowing a contract like Kovy's to NJ... 17 years 150 mill first off that means they are well over the cap which means guys are either getting demoted and or trade.. (demotion i understadn if the guy sis playing poorly but is it right that a guy gets the boot so some greedy a-hole can get 17 years 150$ mil contracts) second of the guy is 27 ..do you really think this clown will play til he is 44??? then what the devils can rid themselves of the contract while he sips drinks on the beach after having made 9 mil a year .. this is total BS!!!! i hope that his cap hit remains even if he retires or all the gms in the league should boycott... this cap loop hole garbage makes me wanna boycott the league and im a diehard fan...

Andrewfromsherb said...

Man Im frustrated today this Rangers team has got nothing left and no foreseeable way to shake things up.. I cannot see how we even make the playoffs.

Andrewfromsherb said...

an once again rid us of Drury!!!!!!!!!! rid us of Rozival and for gods sakes kick Redden to the Curb... we need these guys out.. take the C from Drury if he stays as maybe he will realise how lackluster he has become and score some freakin goals..!!! then maybe just maybe we can enjoy more than just the first and last week of the seasn this year!!!!! personally ill take a young stepan a young mcDonough and a young Sauer or Pashnin over those three aging eye sores we call our cap nightmare. ok enough ranting.. man I wish I could be the Guest blogger here and make some suggestions on how to fix this candy ass team up

LI Joe said...

give me a break andrew - who the heck do you want to be the c. the answer is nobody.

drury scored 20-25 1st 2 yrs and had 1 bad yr and you want to kick him to the curb. well newsflash you can't. full no movement clause for next 2 yrs. and team usa must have seen something good about him putting him on olympics. same with rozy playing well down the stretch and also playedwell for team czech. so why don't you try rooting for these guys next 2 yrs instead of whining

do agree with you on redden though

Andrewfromsherb said...

Id give the C to Cally cuz he goes out every night and shows some guts.. I will give you the fact that Dru did score 20+ goals, played great on the penalty kill and was never one to shy away from blocking shots, that being said we went out and got this guy because he was supposed to be CLUTCH..following his goal in 07 with 7 seconds (no thanks to Fedor Tyutin for clearing the puck instead of flippin it lightly to the neutral zone (by the way was glad to see him go cuz of that)but has that happened in NY??? Cally on the other hand is in my opinion the heart of this team and he has also scored 20 goals. all of that being said I think Patrick Marleaus 40+ goal season is a testament of how stripping a guy of the 'C' can perhaps proivide some motivation and relieve some pressure..As for Rozy ..gimme a break ... he played well yeah but he is a stump , has no personality, never lays a body check and often looks lost.. I find him boring to watch and at 5 mil I cant think of any better place for him then out the door ...

Andrew e-mail your rant to me and I'll put it up tomorrow. nyrfan94@yahoo.com.

Andrew_794 said...

lol @ joe i assume your comments were more towards the second andrew posting...

i dont mind drury at all, he does alot of good things but that contracts ridiculous..and putting up 20-25 goals isnt enough for that much money...nor is the 55(ish?) points he put up that year..

i just know maddens going to sign a contract for probably 2-3.5 mill and here we are stuck with dru at 7.2 or thereabouts and they are essentially the same player.

although i agree the second andrews rantings though, chill out lol...only 2 years more of him and rosi...almost halfway to redden being gone!

LTP said...

it appears to me that none of you especially JohM realizes that Brad Richards was 7th in the league in scoring & put up 91 points last season & Kevin ur wrong we would have the necessary space by demoting Redden & including Rozival in the trade which would clear ample space!

LTP said...

this is the best blog on the web as far as the Rangers go, but there is no bigger bunch of negative so called Ranger fans than there are who post on here. You guys all come on here & post nothing but negative remarks about mgmt. constantly it's getting very old & tired. I hate Sather more than anyone & I've been a season tkt holder for over 20 years, but he's who we have & I am supporting him rather than bashing every single move the guy makes. I swear I think htis site is posted on by Islander fans, you guys are all frauds!

Andrew_794 said...

@ltp, i agree we all (including me) bring up redden and rosi and other of sathers signing...but what do you expect when theres rumours out there concerning players that we cant get due to those horrible contracts? its going to be brought up in any and every move we try to make.

look at any rumour online or in the papers...almost all of them bring up the redden contract and to a certain extent, drury and rosivals. its because of those players we cant bring anyone top tier talent..

and im not sure if you were serious about the fraud comment but thats not the best way of going around things here...just my 2 cents

LI Joe said...

LTP - sather/dolan are epic failures especially at the draft table (last 3 drafts too early to judge). i posted on an earlier thread what the rangers would look like last yr with homegrown draft picks including guys like savard who moved onto other teams. as far as forwards it was really really ugly.

i don't think anyone here bashed every move sather made. i did not bash the 1st rd pick this yrt or the 2 yrs prior. or stepan. or even the drury/rozy signings (very much criticed the redden signing at the time and now). but sathers overall record of 2 playoff series wins and no home ice advantage (not one time) in 10 yrs is epic fail and deserves to be fired yesterday.

sorry if you don't agree but ni will bash sather / dolan whenerever warranted - and that is often at least to date.

LI Joe said...

andrew - they could ahve signed kocy for 6-7 mm a yr by putting redden in minors plus some smaller moves. so that excuse is really not true. they could have and should have made the room for kovy. losing redden was a no brainer for starters

Kevin DeLury said...

LTP, that's what I said. The only way to afford him would be demoting Redden and trading Rozy.

Also, sure there is a lot of negative comments, but I think most Ranger fans are just frustrated at this point. Too many years of bad contracts and bust prospects.

Although, I think more Ranger fans need to be positive about the future of this team. Finally, this team, in my opinion, is headed in the right direction. Proved by Sather not putting the Rangers in an even worse cap hole by signing Kovalchuk or bringing in older injured players (Savard).

They seem to be focused on going with youth as evidenced by going with players like Del Zotto, Gilroy and Anisimov recently and saying prospects like McDonagh and Stepan have a chance.

It may take two years, but if they stick to what they're preaching the Rangers will be a winning organization for many years to come.

"...if the Rangers are truly dedicated to a youth movement they will stay away from each of these two. Plus Rangers can't afford Richards this year even after sending Redden down to Hartford. Unless Dallas is willing to take Drury and Redden in return. Yeah right."

Kevin, what?!

Parise is just turning 26 in a couple of days! If the Rangers could steal a 26-yr-old, playmaking, goal-scoring center who can play both sides of the ice--you'd be opposed because it's somehow against the youth movement?! He's 26--actually 25 until next week!!! That's young. Give Stepan/McD/Staal/Mcilrath five years and Parise would be in his peak 30-32 year old career stage. GET HIM!!!

Also, while youth is great, Henrik is not going to be superhuman forever. I'd like the kids to develop but we also have to try to ice a good team while we have a world-class goalie. Parise would be a GREAT pickup for this reason. He would be good now and not too old when the kids develop and right on the same career trajectory as Henrik.

LI Joe said...

parise is rfa not ufa after this yr. so to get the devs to not match have to go to 7 or 8 mm per yr (and devs still would match probably). so besides the cap hit the compensation is 4 number 1 picks. absolutely no way i'd do it. as ufa yes. as rfa heck no.

Kevin DeLury said...

James, I was talking about staying away from Richards and Madden not Parise.

Kevin DeLury said...

Just got Andrewfromsherb's rant and he will be guest blogger tomorrow. It's a doosey.

My bad, Kevin. Couldn't imagine you wouldn't want Parise to leave the Devs for the Rangers.

No more half-assed, comments after quickly perusing posts at work...
