Rangers Deny Two-Year, $15 Million Offer for Kovalchuk

Elliotte Friedman over at CBC says he was told that the Rangers offered Ilya Kovalchuk a two-year $15 million contract, which was denied by the organization.

..of course the organization denied it because the is no way the Rangers can afford to make a $7.5 million per offer to Kovalchuk, while also re-signing Staal even if they demoted Redden to Hartford.

...obviously other moves could be made to open up cap space, but c'mon who is actually going to take Brashear off the Rangers hands?

...i know this is a moot point, but if the Rangers had the cap space this would have been signed, seal and delivered on July 1st for the Blueshirts.

It would have been on july first and probably 8-10 million per year, no way glen doesn't over pay for kovi. Did the same thing for redden. There's no doub redden was offered at least 6 mil a year from another team but good ol glen at do go over the top which was high already

ive heard a ton of criticism of kovy but the bottom line is this guy fills our scoring need in a hurry.

Elliot Friedman is a very reliable source too

Everyone wants Redden demoted to Hartford but Sather will never do that because he's afraid it might hurt his chances of acquiring future big name stars...they wouldn't want the same thing to happen to them...when was the last time the rangers sent a star player down to the minors to gain cap space ?

wonderin, that's a great take on why Redden hasn't been sent down to Hartford yet or may never.

We sent kasparitis down after he got hurt and left him down there even when he got healthy. I'm not sure but I think his salary would have counted against our cap in the 06-07 season

wonderin - i see what you're saying and normally would say exact same thing. the later into the contract the less the perception of what you're saying. still its only beginning of yr 3 of 6. BUT to sign a star like kovy you take the chance of this perception. 1st off there would be little room on the cap to sign others next 2 yrs after signing a kovy. 2nd with cba expiring in 2 yrs there would likely be amnesty buyouts with no cap hits so redden would be bought out then. 3rd as part of new cba there is good chance one or both of these comes to be - no more putting contracts in minors to avoid cap hits, and no longer fully guaranteed contracts.

so with all that said you take the risk of this perception and put redden in minors to sign a star like kovy. BUT you don't do it to more guys at same time other than those they've already done it for like rissmiller. so they should not do to rozy as well - the more they do it the more the perception you mentioned becomes reality.

the other player they did it to besides rissmiller was kaspar but that was late in his contract.

maybe talks with Stahl have gotten to the point that Sather feels Stahl is going to want too much and is unsignable in NY. If so, then maybe he shifts this money to Kovy.

Id hate to see it, Id lke the defense to get alot stronger and removing Stahl would only hurt it, but maybe Sather feels the "chasm" is too great. Maybe he hopes getting Kovy and more offense will suffice the D snd maybe Eminger and more experience under the belts of Gilroy and DelZotto will be enough to replace Stahl.

Who knows?

Kevin as per the cba Redden cannot be sent dow until the opening of training camp & thats also the reason that presently Brashear counts towards our cap. Not until the 1st. day of camp can they be sent down along with their cap hits.

LI Joe said...

brashear counts even if sent down. reason is over 35 when he signed a multi yr contract

only will not count if he is traded or otherwise winds up on another nhl team

Kevin DeLury said...

LTP, I did know that, but the Rangers can bring Kovalchuk on board and then drop Redden to Hartford during training camp as they're able to go over the cap during the summer.

I couldn't agree with you more. If we had the cap space he would be signed. He probably wanted to play here.

true but it only allows us to exceed the cap by a max of 10% so if the cap is at 59.5 mill. for this coming season that would give us an additional 5.9 mill. to spend imo this is the reason Staal has not been resigned too, so that we can leave enough cap space open to either sign Kovalchuk or make a deal as looks more realistic now for Brad Richards.

I wonder if there's a limit to the number of times the Rangers can put Brashear on re-entry waivers during the season. Maybe some dumb GM would be willing to take a chance on him at half price. I'm looking at you Brian Burke.

I don't understand this Redden to the AHL will hurt our chances of landing future FA's. Thats a bunch of mullarky. The players know that Redden sucks and its not like we are buying out his contract at 2/3rds the price. We are paying every cent to the player that doesn't deserve it. Only difference - he plays in another league. If that argument holds water -than Brashear's contract and subsequent demotion in the AHL should be a problem. The demotion to the AHL is a business tool that has been agreed upon by the NHLPA in the CBA. There is no moral obligation to keep the player in the NHL and there is no breach of contract.
The only reason why he will remain on the roster is the fact that paying a hockey player 6M in the AHL is obsene and it will take a commitment from ownership to pull the strings. Since when did Dolan become infactuated with the NYR's? when was the last time he actually knew the organization existed? If he cares about the NYR's-how do you explain Slats?

rick -

can't send too many guys or too early in contract or it does affect way othe players and agents look at things. 1st yr of a 6 yr deal is a lot worse than 4th yr and so on. and if they tried to do it to redden AND rozy its a lot worse than just one of them. plus rozy is viable nhl er whereas redden is not and won't be. i think they should risk the perception to sign kovy (on redden sent down). plus if they sign kovy even with redden out they won't have roon for free agents for at least 2 yrs and then cba expires and new rules likely anyway.

brash is a different thing altogether since his contract was over 35 and multi yr, and there is no cap savings on him being sent down.
