Rangers Plans Do Not Include Kovalchuk

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants reports that the prevailing wisdom around the NHL is that the Rangers are not interested in Ilya Kovalchuk now. Nor will they if the Kings break off talks with the high-scoring sniper for a third time.

Gross cites the cap problems signing Kovalchuk to a mega deal while still having Gaborik on the books will have on the Rangers.

...do the Rangers desperately need his scoring? Sure. But the salary cap problems his contract will bring to the Rangers makes this a big time pass for me.

Aside from all the monetary and political B.S., the biggest issue with the Rangers is scoring goals. Period. The only reason they finished in the top 16 in scoring is because of Gaborik. Otherwise, they'd be bottom three like they were before he got here.

Don't forget how many games this team lost because they just couldn't score that tying goal, or that go ahead goal.

SOME move has to be made for a proven secondary scorer.

Agreed. However, not sure clogging the cap for years to come (how do they still re-signing Staal?) will benefit the team long term.

I try and go to around ten games a year and I'd be so psyched to see Kovalchuk play the game in the flesh....but I don't think he's any type of answer for this team. But again, scoring is essential.

I would love to have this guy we need the goals badly buts its not going to happen

Not even sure with demoting Redden the Rangers could afford him.

I read somewhere a few days ago that someone asked the question, for the salary, is it better to have 1 guy who scores 40-50 or 4 guys who score 20?

I must say that after watching the Blackhawks dismantling, would they be better off if they had just unloaded Hossa? Also it's easy to say it's worth it because they one the cup, but what if they hadn't? What if San Jose or Philly had won? They would still have to dump. Thats why I think I'm with Kevin on this one. Kovy is great, but I think it would handicap us down the road. Just ask Crosby who his wingers will be this year.

Chicago had to go through hell to get to where they are now (champions). Most rangers fans believe we have already gone through hell and that these next few years could be our breakout. Truth is that we have been just good enough not to have gone through hell. I hate to say it but we might have to hit rock bottom to rise again. Rock bottom could be this year. I pray it wont be. I really do , but i got to be a real fan and not some disillusioned fan.

I really do not see a problem with signing Kovalchuk.
The Rangers will have cap relief in two years. Drury 7 million, Avery 2 Million and Rosival's 5 million are off the books, and Redden then has 2 years left and at that point he will definitely be sent to Hartford. Only Callahan, Dubinsky, and Anisimov will be the most important RFA's next year. I would take Kovalchuk over Duninsky any day. take a look at capgeek

Steve how do you pay for him the first two years?

@Chef Dave: if you want to win the cup, you need both. If you want to flounder, either or will do.

Does anyone looking at the roster consider the NYR's doing anything else than tanking this next season and shooting for another top 10 pick?

Rick, I'm with you this could be a tough year for the Rangers. But I think it's one of those take a step back to take two steps forward.

Get the young guys some experience so they're that much better in a year or two.

redden to minors 6.5

brash traded along with pick i said 2nd rd brooks said 3rd rd in his sunday column 1.4

trade gilroy 1.6

redden and gilroys replacements
(2.0)

covers most of it for this yr. for contract in 8 mm range.

2nd yr rozy has 1 yr left after this yr with real $ 3 mm and $ 5 mm cap so would be easier to move.

and depending on drurys prodcution whether its 1st 2 yrs here or like last yr he might be bought out if its like last yr.

LI Joe is absolutely right!!!!

Package our crappy contracts with 1st 2nd or 3rd round draft picks..... We have done really well in the draft and stocked piled a ton of young talent that i have no problem giving away a year or 2 in the draft if it gets rid of rozi, brashear, to sign Kovlchuk.... Plus bury Redden in Hartford!!!

Like Gilroy is you biggest problem?!? He just finshed up his rookie season if MDZ had a year like he did i am sure you all would have been calling for the rangers to rade him. Let the young guys develop for 1.75million doesnt really take a big cap hit. New york everyone wants to win now , but it takes time......not trying to defend Sather or anything haha that would be a joke.

-good article on our defenseman situation, more specifically, it touches on Gilroy and his difficulties last season. I like Gilroy. I think he will develop and mature into a true NHL'er. Not every player can step in and play up to the speed and talent of the best international hockey league in the world.

Cries for the Rangers to get rid of Gilroy are a little rushed. He had one season under his belt. Give the kid a break and let him mature. If two/three years down the road we're having a problem, trading him is an option.

Redden to Hartford, buy out Drury, sign Kovi, let young centers mature and in 2 or 3 years we contend.

As far as Gilroy is concerned it was only one year and he should mature a little, but this "kid" is going to be 26 in 2 weeks. He should be into his prime now. For some reason his age always seems to be overlooked; Think about how MDZ will be lighting up the league when he's that seasoned.

they are not buying out drury this summer - which extends some of his cap hit 2 more yrs past the 2 he he has left. somewhat of chance they buy him out next summer unless he goes back to 20-25 goals like his 1st 2 yrs here
