effin love this!!! del zotto is gonna be one of the top D-men in the league bar none! kids got a nasty streak in him and his offensive game is years beyond what it should be

I love this too. Maybe next time he'll even COVER Kovalchuk. But you know, knocking him while he's off balance and freely hacking away is about the same value.

Defensive misread by Del Zotto allows Elias and Kovalchuk turn play into two on one against Girardi which helps to explain why Del Zotto had worst plus minus on rangers last year...

wonderin, c'mon man total buzzkill. However you are correct.

Nice retaliation by the aforementioned 230lb Kovy. Explains a bit about his playoff fire too!

Back to stupid chico, he didn't even mention the fact that Kovalchuk got blasted. between his high-pitched, inane blabber, Emeriks sing-songy, "I'm reading a childrens's book" delivery, and stupid Bobblehead Daneyko, Devils broadcasts are unwatchable.

Yes-when he talks.

My sarcasm is wasted here

When Ilya was asked to comment on the video of Del Zotta, Kovalchuk replied, "who?"

wonderin,
Oddly enough both Del Zotto and Girardi played worse as a pair than they did alone. I wonder how frequently it was because of plays like this where Del Zotto effectively gets into Girardi's ice.

Nice to see one of the tens of Devils fans has made an appearance on my blog. I'm honored.

who me?

Not you dog, the anonymous poster.

Kevin,
Anonymous does have a point. MDZ basically cleared the way for Kovalchuk to go in free on Lundqvist while also setting up Elias for a screened shot. I'm sure Kovalchuk will take that from a defenseman any day for the small price of a very late dumping.

I wouldn't know who Del Zotta was either Anonymous. Perhaps he plays with Eliosh?

lol del zotta? is that how you pronounce it with a brooklyn accent:P?

and not sure if that was sarcasm or not...but either way...by the time del zotto is kovys age, the league will know all about him...heck most of them do already.

Andrew,
Are you referring to Del Zotto's willingness to join the rush, his high amount of PP time, or that most forwards know they can just skate through him on their way to the net? Because I'd think most of the league knows all three above and he'd better fix the third by the time he's Kovalchuk's age if he expects to stick as a defenseman and not a power play specialist.

Kevin DeLury said...

dog, you're being pretty tough on a player who just finished his rookie year at age 19 aren't you?

dog eat chow world said...

Kevin,
I am. Someone has to introduce a little realism into the "MDZ is the greatest thing since sliced bread" world. Right now he's a solid forward playing the point on the power play. But that's not the position he lines up at most of the game and not where his great potential value lies.

dog eat chow world said...

And yes he's just 19 and it's not his fault the Rangers threw him into the league before he learned how to defend adults. But the fact remains that he must develop that part of his game unless he's going to be one dimensional

Kevin DeLury said...

dog, you are 100% correct. If he can't lower his +/- he can't be out there. Especially if he offense fades the way it did after such a hot start.

Would love to see Del Zotto and McIlrath on the same pairing this year...let the young talent develop at the highest level while the team is stuck in a cap mire.

dog eat chow world said...

wonderin,
I would love to see McIlrath playing by 2013. But having MDZ and McIlrath playing together this year might amount to the worst defensive pairing in NHL history. McIlrath can't skate at an AHL level yet. Del Zotto can skate, but doesn't have a clue in his own zone. That would not be a learning experience. That would be a massacre.

mcilrath is clearly not ready for 2 yrs. and the earlier he signs his rookie contract and plays in nhl or ahl (that part is 2 yrs away) the earlier the clock starts on his contract and rfa and ufa status. so it is a bad idea for today and for a few yrs from now

dog.

im expecting del zotto to round out, hes 19, and will probably add 20 pounds? and grow a bit maybe. yeah his plus/minus wasnt great, but like kev said, he got thrown into the lineup with no real top d-men (staal somewhat)...there is absolutely NO leader on defense, redden is overpaid and everyone knows it, and has just gotten worse, rosi is capable but needs to show it. a top dman for staal, del zotto , and mccirath to learn from would also be quite beneficial.
