On making more moves...
“Through training camp, and then once you get into the start of the season, you don’t want to fool around too much with the roster,” Sather said on Monday. “However, in the meantime, it’s a constant effort to make the team better and improve it. There’s a lot we go through during the summer. There’s a lot of work involved. And we are not done considering things.”
...as I said earlier today, unless Sather can work his trade magic, their cap situation will prevent them from making any kind of impact move.
On Marc Staal negotiations...
“Obviously we want to get Marc Staal signed,” said Sather. “If someone comes along and gives him an offer sheet, which is always possible, we’ll match it. But we are going to keep negotiating with him.”
...not sure what the hold-up is here. $4.5 million seems like the number both side should be happy with so let's get it done. The longer this drags on the more potential it has of getting ugly.
On Ryan McDonagh...
“McDonagh came to our rookie camp the first week of July and looked terrific,” said Sather. “He’s a strong kid who skates well. We expect he’s going to play. I don’t know if he’ll make it right out of training camp, but he’s certainly got the opportunity to do that. It’s really up to him.”
...let's hope if he's not ready the Rangers do the right thing and send him to Hartford instead of forcing him on the big club roster. Really looking forward to seeing what he can do in camp.
On Henrik Lundqvist getting more games off...
“Biron is an experienced guy who is really excited to work with (Rangers’ goaltending coach) Benoit Allaire and play for the New York Rangers,” Sather said. “He’s going to play a lot of games. Henrik will see less games then he saw last year, which is important because it’s tough to play as many games as he has the last few years. It’ll do (Henrik) a whale of good to have an experienced pro like Marty to work with.”
...Biron could be the most important signing this off-season.
...i've said this before but I am loving the new transparent Sather. I know a lot of you (or all) despise this man and nothing he does will change your mind, but I think after nine years he finally gets it. Man, I hope I don't regret that statement.

while hes made his share of bad moves, i think sather has definitely improved as of late. every GM makes questionable moves or pays too much for players, thats sports unfortunately. we have a good youth system that he has done a great job of building up, so we should give him credit for that
One pretty good offseason doesn't justify every bad off season before this. I will admit I like where he's headed and if he sticks to his gameplan and turns this team into a contender and a team that wins ill go pro sather, but for now I highly dislike him
In no way, shape or form does Sather's recent improvements make up for the last nine years of awfulness.
But hey, at least he's speaking. I dont remember a word last offseason. At least he tells us the truth about Staals contract. I thought it was cool to say he got Boogaard to protect hank. Even though hes paying him too much I feel like he woke up a little this year.
People "despise" him because they have no idea what he is thinking when he makes his decisions. I am right on line with you Kev, the more he opens up to the fans the more they are going to understand that his best interest are making our club a cup contender.
I'm liking everything Sather has to say here. Moves, if they need to made, have to get done on the offseason to make sure the team has some chemistry going into pre-season camp.
"...as I said earlier today, unless Sather can work his trade magic, their cap situation will prevent them from making any kind of impact move."
He must have some magic in the works, otherwise why would he say this (multiple times). He knows what's going on. Like another two commenter here I've had enough of the Sather bashing. He has had some good stuff to say recently — let's ride with it.
Good stuff!
i will give him some credit for the transparency...but he still has a lot of trust to build back up. hopefully sather can surprise everyone and pull a move or two this summer or during the season to make us a playoff team and give the fans something to cheer for while we "retool". seeing what Montreal did this season and with the issues this team has scoring and on defense i would be more than happy taking the last playoff spot and rolling the dice
Holy Sather lovefest!!!!
is anyone else afraid that a gm who may not even want to sign staal, will offer staal an excessive amount of money just to drive the price up and give us less cap space?
chris, I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet. Especially from Garth Snow who has to add more salary to the Islanders payroll. That would be such a great pr move for him.
I'd like to see how he would've acted this season if we had more cap money to spend. Overall though, he has won back some small respect from me which is a start, I guess.
oof. *offseason in previous comment
I hate to continually be the contrarian anti-Sather poster, but how on earth can ANYONE reading these quotes say Sather gets ANYTHING?
Every quote is just rhetorical lip service, that could be from ANYONE.
examples:
“However, in the meantime, it’s a constant effort to make the team better and improve it. There’s a lot we go through during the summer. There’s a lot of work involved. And we are not done considering things.”
We're not done considering things? what does that even mean? and what work is involved? and how has it been a constant effort to improve the team?
essentially NOTHING has been done. The signed a back up goalie and resigned some marginal forwards that they hope will be better than they were last year. theres no transparency, because there is no action. The team still has the same glaring weaknesses, a shutdown defenseman and a legitimate center. And dont give me the cap space argument, other teams figure it out, and thats Sather's job, figure it out.
Its NOT his job to throw up his hands and say we dont have cap space, theres nothing i can do -- I can say that.
and his quotes on the marc staal negotiations? “Obviously we want to get Marc Staal signed,” ??
so sign him then. he isnt asking for anything outrageous. just sign him.
Even his quotes about Ryan McDonagh wreak of his lack of knowledge and distance from what is going on with this team.
“He’s a strong kid who skates well. We expect he’s going to play. I don’t know if he’ll make it right out of training camp, but he’s certainly got the opportunity to do that. It’s really up to him.”
any GM can say that about ANY player. its so non-specific, its offensive. That quote can be about any player in Ranger training camp. If he was really being transparent and knew what the fuck was going on, he wouldve discussed McDonagh's background, strengths, weaknesses., etc.
Anyway, i felt compelled to write this, after reading Kevin's quote that "i've said this before but I am loving the new transparent Sather," followed by all of the Pro Sather comments.
Deaf Dumb and Blind Sather
Go AWAY!!!!
I hope Sather indeed plans on making more moves this summeror we are in for another year of boring hockey.

smash, I'm just happy he's saying something as opposed to the last nine years when he said nothing.
sather should have started this "transition" movement when he was signed 10 years ago. wasnt that the whole point when he was hired? its amazing how you can do so much wrong and a few lucky playoff years can cover you. he better be developing youth and letting these terrible contracts let out.
i agree with smash
sather shouldn't even be here anymore. 2 playoff series wins in 10 yrs. not once haing home ice advantage in 10 yrs.
step down sather. this way we won't have to bash you anymore
It's unfortunate that our happiness depends on how good the rangers are which in turn depends upon how good a gm sather is...he doesn't make me happy !
While I dont approve of Sather and believe he should have been gone years ago, I think he has dont exactly what this team needs this off season....
1. Back up goalie
2. veteran d-depth in hartford
3.stay young
4. bring back our NHL ready Free agents
5. play making center/ goal scorer
Looking at the class of Free Agents on the market this year, I cannot think of 1 play making center that we HAD to sign...The only real sniper on the market was Kolvachk, and sorry I dont want him for the next 17 years, even if we had the cap room to get it done....
The past few seasons Sather has changed half the team twice and the head coach....killing and chemistry that was there....
If we all believe Torts is the coach for this team, than I really believe a full season completed learning his system, will benefit the team this season!!!
Also,We had 2 rookies on defense last year...now a year older, wiser, stronger, should be improved....
I have no problem with this off season, I think the Rangers will actually make the playoffs, barring major injury, probably lose in the 1st round unless Lundqvist is HOT....
I dont care what Sather is saying, I only care what he is or in not doing...and right now I think he is doing the right things, alll that is left that I think he can do before the season is sign Stall, and send redden to hartford!!!

Word I'm hearing is the league has rejected Kovalchuk 17 year NJ contract... Stay tuned....

It's been made official. NHL rejects Kovalchuk's deal. Let the soap opera begin, again...
What is scary is the thought that Slats says he is not through yet. This is a weak FA pool to begin with and because certain players remain available-thats when the poossibility of over spending or over term the contract remains a distinct possibility. Especially when Slats has no self control when it comes down to money, like my wife with shoes. All I care about is a well rounder #1 center that can 1-score goals and 2-has the skill set and vision to be a decent playmaker. That is the position that a FA can fill since a #1 center may not be in the works via the system for a number of years.
