Kovalchuk to Rangers?

Update, 11:04 a.m.:
Darren Dreger of TSN tweets that Kovalchuk should just announce he wants to come to the Rangers. He also adds that Sather would clear the deck for him.

...i'm sure Sather would want to but not sure he can.

Original Post:
From ESPN's John Buccigross...

Is Ilya Kovalchuk waiting to sign with Rangers the day after Lebron signs with Knicks?less than a minute ago via web

...been holding back on all the Kovalchuk to Rangers rumors, but I thought I'd share this one.

...what are your thoughts on Rangers signing Kovalchuk. I'm not sure how they get him under the cap even with sending Redden to Hartford. Wouldn't be any money left for Staal and Girardi.

Rick Carpiniello at the Rangers Report says Kovalchuk to Rangers isn't happening.

Rumors . . .
I think the organization has to take a good look at it. Anytime a player like Kovalchuck is available, you have to take a good look. I think he's probably a little better than Gaborik and I'd be glad to have him on the team.
That said, I don't imagine this is happening (unless Kovalchuck really really wants to play in New York).

He'd have to take a pay cut to come here that's for sure.

Not to sure theNYR organization can make the necessary cap changes required to add Kovy to the team. Not too sure it would be c good fit chemistry wise as well. Would rather pass and direct our needs to the #1 center position that is sorely needed on this club. Its hard to imagine a team without a #1 center two years in a row and take the club seriously.

if we could ditch redden and add kovy, i'd be all for it.

however, i just dont see this happening.

kovalchuk is an elite offensive force, obviously finanial issues must be worked out.

Kovy is not going to take a pay cut. That is not his m.o. Plus he really does hat Avery & burying Redden would not be enough clearance. If he does go the devils I'm not too worried because they would have to lose so many role players to make the cap. & we all know that Kovy's achilies heel is that agitators agitate him. With the Devils losing the likes of Zubrius to sign him & the Rangers having Avery & Prust, I'm not concered.

Imagine Kovy and Gabby playing together. Then down the road Stepan turns out to be a great player and fills the #1 center spot. With our defense the way its looking and Henrik in net. Everybody will be looking out for us. Holy hell its to good to even think about that.

he can be fit in

start with redden to minors

2nd trade brash along with 2nd rd pick to clear his cap space. and yes teams would go for it especially those near the cap floor. and yes its worth it to us since kovy is top 10 player

3rd if more room needs to be made - can trade girardi or gilroy or a fringe forward. if its gilroy losing gilroy and redden is not that difficult

mcdonagh takes 1 spot and a guy like potter the other. and those 2 are better than redden gilroy and we get a world class forward

so effectively trading a 2nd rd pick, redden and gilroy for kovy. and as other contracts expire kovys contract fits in better and better in future yrs. just not 10mm. try 8 mm or 8.5 mm per yr.

get it done sather

these rumors sound bogus. Neither one offers any collaborating evidence and just blurts it out. I have my doubts, but it would be nice if true.
