Frolov to Sign 1-Year Deal with Rangers (Updated)

Update, 10:22 p.m.:
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants says the deal will probably be less than the $2.9 million Frolov earned last season.

Update, 10:15 p.m.:
...as pointed out in the comments section, the deal is probably going to be worth more than $800,000. But as Frolov's agent says in the below interview, the market was down for Frolov so maybe the Rangers did get a great deal. Although if it's a $3 million deal no way they can afford to keep Redden on the roster after re-signing Staal. Killing two birds with one stone.

...i've been on the "give the young guys a chance" bandwagon the entire offseason, but if the Rangers have the opportunity to bring in a potential 30-goal scorer on the cheap, I think they have no choice but to do it.

...i would still like to see Torts and Sather find a way to get some of the prospects into the line-up at different points during the season.

Original Post:
According to TSN, Russian newspaper SovSports is reporting that Alexander Frolov is on the verge of signing with the New York Rangers; however they have learned that while the two-sides are in discussion, no deal has been finalized.

Arthur Staple of Newsday tweets that the deal won't be finalized tonight and could wrap up tomorrow.

Dmitry Chesnokov at Puck Daddy has this quote from Frolov's agent Sergei Isakov...

"Alexander Frolov will soon put his signature on a contract with the New York Rangers. He made a decision that he will play one more year in the NHL," he said. "And then it will be clearer where he will continue his career."

Isakov adds that the contract will be similar to Maxim Afinogenov's one-year $800.000 deal he signed with Atlanta last year.

...geez I take a few hours off to hang with my family and all hell brakes loose.

...if Sather is able to get Frolov for one-year $800,000 that could be the steal of the off-season. I would have thought you were out of your mind if you said the Ranger would be able to sign Marc Staal and a potential 30-goal scorer for $5 million per combined.

I doubt he means price-wise. More likely refers to that deal because of length and that fact that Afin- is another client of his agency.

i think the tsn article is misleading. the report says that the deal will be structured to be similar to what afinogenov got with atlanta last year. i dont think it will be for the price. he'll prolly be worth at most $3 mil. but i'll take him for a year. from what i've hear though, is that hes a lazy player and didnt show up all the time. but hey if lazy is another 30 goal season or at least a 25 goal season, im fine with that.

oh yea, hey sather, SIGN STAAL ALREADY!

Yeah you guys are probably right as far as $ goes. If he gets $3 million no way Rangers can afford to keep Redden on the roster after re-signing Staal. Unless they have a trade lined up for Rozsival.

Se confirmar vao ser uma bela contratação e uma boa parceria com Gaborik, Blueshirts fan in Brazil ,Lets's go Rangers

There is some upside here . . .
I like that the deal sounds like it's for one year and under 2.9 million - that would be pretty cool for a guy "who would likely be the top candidate to play on the top line with Marian Gaborik."
At RangerRants, goodieNY comments "He’s got a chip on his shoulder, and the fact that he’s only looking for one year means he believes he can improve his play. If he after cash, he would already be in Russia."
I would love it if this guy came here with something to prove - like Prospal did - that might get his numbers back up. In any case, I began liking him more after reading-up and watching some video over the course of the day.

@Kevin ~ one way we're going to see prospects is the way we always see them - when there are injuries. Otherwise it doesn't seem like anybody is quite ready to make it out of camp.
I'd like to see a productive Zuccarello-Aasen in the lineup. He's got a little more experience, even if he's not played in the NHL, and may have an edge over the others.
I fully expect Grachev to be called-up over the course of the year.

One version (and we'll see several with Torts in command) . . .

Frolov -- Christensen -- Gaborik
Prospal -- Anisimov -- Zuccarello-Aasen
Dubinsky -- Drury -- Callahan
Prust -- Avery -- Boogard / Boyle

i like this move as well, definitely an upgrade, and no long term contract to worry about. no way cally and duby play on the third line. i know people are excited about MZA, but lets not get ahead of ourselves and put him on the second line.

Kevin DeLury said...

Yeah I'd actually like to see Gaborik and Frolov on different lines. Spread out the scoring. Don't see how MZA or any prospect can crack this lineup right now without injury.

Dubi/Christensen/Gabby
Frolov/Anisimov/Prospal
Callahan/Drury/Avery
Boogaard/Byers/Prust

i like ag's lines better just switching the order of the 2nd and 3rd lines

kevin - like ag said injuries happen. the rangers were very lucky last 2 yrs that way. or on top of luck could be they were not aggressive to go to hard parts of ice and also too many guys played hurt. well especially if redden goes down there should be no reason for guys to suit up injured

Sick! I'm pretty excited about this (potential) signing. The last quarter of last season I started watching Kings/Anaheim/West Coast games streaming online when I got home from work late...

I've watched Frolov play — he's a beast, a puck-possesion type player and he's also the type to battle against the boards and dominate...this is a a bit of a stretch but he's a poor-man's Jagr (still a compliment).

The lazy part? Put it in the back of your mind...he gives 110% in the offensive zone (again, hard to knock off the puck) and he also killed penalties for the Kings.

From what I gather he was frustrated last because Murray put him as a 3rd line checking player (he's a goal scorer) and I've heard he was going through a divorce ( http://www.talk-sports.net/nhl/girlfriend.aspx/Alexander_Frolov )

I hate to be "that guy" and repost a comment from a previous blog post, but I think this is worth taking into consideration:

Frolov's 2009-10 evaluation from LAKingsInsider.com:

The good: Very little changes in Frolov’s evaluation from year to year. When he’s good, he’s very good. Frolov’s puck-control skills are on par with the NHL’s best, and his immense two-way skills allow him to contribute offensively but still play a key role in a “shutdown line” role or as part of a penalty-kill unit. Frolov was particularly dynamic coming out of the Olympic break in early March, when he had three goals and six assists in six games.

The bad: Frolov’s season hit a low point early, when Terry Murray benched him from an October game in Dallas and publicly called him out for a perceived lack of effort and interest. The situation seemed to improve after that, but the fact that the word “enigma” has been attached to Frolov for several years is no accident or mistake. His tendency to dominate a stretch of games, and then disappear from a stretch of games — or vice versa — is still hard to figure, after all these years.

Also, I like these line combos because I can totally see Torts throwing his ’Merican guys together.

Prospal -- Anisimov -- Zuccarello-Aasen

Dubinsky -- Drury -- Callahan

Frolov Shmolov, I just want to get my line combos in:

Frolov/Christiansen/Gabby
Dubinsky/Anisimov/Callahan
Avery/Drury/Grachev
Boogard/Boyle/Prust

chef dave stick to cooking... Grachev on the 3rd line??? There are so many clowns on this blog that believe stupid things. Grachev has a long journey ahead of him. If anything Stepan has a better chance than Grachev to make it out of camp.

Back to the topic, Frolov is a great pick up for the Rangers. If there is chemistry with him and Gaborik it can be a great year for both of them.

@Kevin, split up Gaborik and Frolov??? The most talented players on the team and you want them split up so Dubi can play 1st line wing?? Let go, just let go. Dubi will be fine on 2nd and 3rd line dont worry. He is not a 1st line winger. You cant be serious.

Kevin DeLury said...

king, with the lack of offense on this team I'd hate to rely on one line all year. Splitting the two up gives the Rangers two legit lines.

ag_blue said...

I hear both of you Kevin & King ...
Lucky for you guys we have coach Tortorella, so we'll get to see both of those lines
;)

@ Kevin & theking,
I think Dubi played very well on the wing last year & will actually put up more offence if he doesn't have to play against the oppositions top line every night (a-la Jordan Staal). Also I admit Grachev on the 3rd line is optomistic, but with a couple of vets I think it's do-able. I'd be happy to see him, stepan or MZA in that role. I definitely don't want to see him playing 5 minutes a night on the 4th line, Hartford is better for that.
