Gomez the Great

Last night the New York Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils by a score of 4-1 in the first game of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal matchup. For a full recap go to Yahoo! Sports.

...I think Gomez likes to play against his former team. His play making ability was on full display last night with his three helpers. His performance last night was the reason we brought him in here.

...when a playoff game is tight, a mental mistake is usually the difference and I'm shocked that mental mistake was made by Brodeur. Great hustle by Callahan on the play, but Brodeur's over-puck handling finally caught up with him last night. Maaaaaarty.

...I'm very encouraged that the Rangers were able to come away with the victory despite the Devils taking it to them for long stretches. There was a point late in the third period where the Devils had the puck in the Rangers zone for almost five straight minutes. If the Rangers can win by three goals while not playing their "A" game, it gives me confidence going forward that we can succeed in the playoffs.

...and the biggest reason we were able to come away with the victory despite not being at our best was Henrik Lundqvist. Although he was helped by three pipes, he was on-point last night. The save he made on Elias in the second period was ridiculous. If he can continue that play this could be a short series.

...got to give props to our overall defense. The Rangers blocked 16 shots last night. Even on the penalty kill that gave up the lone goal they blocked four shots. Great job.

...even when he doesn't score Drury helps this team win. 14 for 18 on face-offs last night.

...Brendan Shanahan might get criticized for losing a step but his playoff experience is going to help this team go very far. Not only does he score the opening goal (so important in the playoffs), he unselfishly gave Dawes the empty net goal (his first career playoff goal), which will give him confidence for the rest of the series knowing he's already on the score sheet.

...last night Avery showed Sather why he needs to sign him as soon as the season ends. He was disciplined all night and scores the goal to put the nail in the coffin.

...can't wait till Friday.
