Certainly some Rangers die-hards respect Brodeur's Hall of Fame stats and his three Stanley Cup championships enough that they would never think of screaming, "Matteau ... Matteau ... Matteau" when they spot him in a restaurant or when he is somewhere signing autographs.
But those fans may be few and far between, and Brodeur does not expect to encounter many of them over the next week or two as the Devils and Rangers slug it out in the best-of-seven first round of the playoffs. Game 1 is scheduled for tomorrow night at the Prudential Center.
"To this day, I still hear his name everywhere I go from Rangers fans," Brodeur said yesterday. "It's part of history. It was a big goal. It is what it is. I got scored on a certain way, on the wrap-around with Slava (Fetisov) sliding into me. It went off him and through me."
...Brodeur gets a lot worse chants than Matteau. Most involving his sister-in-law.
