"When the alternative is having to win four out of seven against Martin Brodeur, is it possible to say you’ve dodged a bullet?
I wouldn’t have thought so before tuning in HDNet (do they have the ability to give you out of town scores?) Saturday night and watching the Washington Capitals rampage to the season-closing seventh straight victory that got Alexander Ovechkin and Co. the Southeast Division title.
But my wondering earlier in the day if the Caps might just be this spring’s version of the 2007 Atlanta Thrashers was put to an end by watching Washington relentlessly nail down its postseason berth. Ovechkin clearly won’t be as easily distracted as Ilya Kovalchuk and Marian Hossa were last spring. Neither does Cristobal Huet look given to the kind of playoff disintegration that Kari Lehtonen experienced against the Rangers.
So when Boston couldn’t even manage a goal last night at home against Buffalo, thereby assuring the Rangers of at least fifth place in the Eastern Conference and a first-round date with the Devils, it certainly didn’t look like the worst possible thing that could have befallen the Blueshirts."
...couldn't agree more. Playing Washington in the first round could have been disaster.
