Flyers Close to Signing Betts

CSNPhilly.com reports that the Flyers have made a trade in an effort to reduce their number of pro contracts from 49 to 48 (the NHL maximum is 50) giving them some additional contract space to sign former Ranger Blair Betts.

...while I'm happy for Betts, unfortunately the Flyers are about to become that much harder to beat.

hahaha please stop, you sound like you know nothing about the hockey. Betts is a non factor because all he can do is KILL PENALTIES. He has no offensive ability. Its going to be great watching the Rangers play him because I know when he is on the ice the Rangers wont get scored on. lol please stop with Betts its embarrassing you people make him sound like an all-star

Nothing I wrote even comes close to implying that I think Betts is an all-star. What I am saying is that Betts will improve the Flyers penalty kill dramatically making them that much harder to beat.

And calling the guy a non-factor because he can't score goals shows how little YOU know about hockey.

I think that Betts isn't much more than a third-line center. That said, he's one of the best fourth-line centers in hockey. His ability to kill penalties is impressive, but I wouldn't consider him the worst loss of the offseason, or even the worst loss of the offseason on the penalty kill. I think that, as much as we're going to regret losing Betts, we're going to regret losing Sjostrom more. He added a potential offensive element to our penalty kill, and was one of the fastest guys on the team. I think people underestimate how much of a factor losing both of them will be, not just Betts

NYRFan, if the Flyers sign Betts they are the same with or without him. Plus the Rangers know Betts' tendencies on the PK so if anything we know Betts' weakness. If you cant score goals or make assists you are useless. I dont care how good defensively you are. That is why the Rangers got rid of him. Boyle is solid defensively in his own end but has so much more offensive potential. Getting rid of Betts' was a good thing. Renny had a hard on for him and finally Torts got rid of him because he knows he sucks. Torts knows more than Renny and knows what it takes to win a cup. You guys are clowns.

this is all absurd.

"If you cant score goals or make assists you are useless."

please tell me you're kidding...

losing betts is by no means the end of the world, but he was a very effective and underrated player.

Ok, it seems to me that whoever is saying Betts is "useless" is just ridiculous. I believe that losing Betts and Sjostrom are huge losses on the PK and the Fourth line. Calgary got a hard working player in sjostrom and if the flyers can get Betts, flyer fans will love him once he blocks his first shot.
