Shanahan's agent Rick Curran explains that the future Hall of Famer is still looking forward to playing and said this regarding a possible reunion with the Rangers, "We haven’t closed the doors on anyone."
...despite Shanahan's over 600 career goals, i'm still not convinced that he is the answer, but I do think he should be an option on the table.

I think Sundin would be a better option, assuming Sundin would accept a low salary.
I agree that I'd rather have Sundin than Shanahan. But either way we're going to have to make some moves to open up cap space. Not sure if we have anyone on our roster that another team would be interested in. Especially with some of their high salaries.
Well Operation Free Up Salary has already begun, with Rissmiller's outright demotion this past week. One would think that Prucha might be the obvious next move, but Prucha has played very well the last 3 games, and by very well, I mean very well for that spot. That spot has given us very little this year, and in 3 games, Prucha has thrown a lot of hits, scored a game tying goal, and gotten into a fight (which he impressively held his own in). Nigel Dawes has been absolutely invisible when he has played, and Dan Fritsche has been a wash, making a few good plays coupled with a few bad. I think as long as Prucha is skating hard and throwing big hits (like that one on Crosby) he stays in over both, and will chip in a goal here and there.
Although he is not a huge cap hit, I think Dawes should be moved while he still has some kind of value. I have never been impressed by Nigel Dawes, even when he was a top AHL scorer and scored 29 points in 61 games. Weinman has been commenting about Redden's urgency, or lack thereof. Dawes plays with even less urgency, and is less physical than Marek Malik, which I used to think was impossible.
Maybe I'm just biased against him, but in his parts of 3 seasons here, I have never thought that he would ever amount to an impact NHL player. Free up a bit more space and get a decent return for him. This would give Prucha even more confidence, something that might lead to goals.
Sign Shanny.
Also, while on the subject of Sundin, I think that by this point in the season it is obvious that Sundin's motives for choosing a team is not money, as he has passed up a guaranteed $20 million by turning down Vancouver. Sundin is a class act, a great team guy and a true professional. Many have pointed out that Sundin has never won anything in the NHL, and I think this could be a reason why he would accept a really low salary for the rest of the season for that chance to win the cup.
So...how many teams has Sundin shopped around? How many teams?GMs will want him come trade deadline? If the Rangers were to sign him I'd say they'd make the third round max. He'd be the guy that gets them one round closer than the past two...
and that wouldn't be worth it why?
