Steve Zipay at Blue Notes reports that Sean Avery was cleared by the NHL/NHLPA's anger management program and was immediately waived by the Dallas Stars today.
According to Zipay, if he clears waivers at 11 a.m. on Monday, the Stars would have to arrange a deal to assign him to Hartford or another AHL team, where he would remain Dallas property. Once Avery is playing in Hartford, or elsewhere, and proves he is in game shape, the Stars could recall him, and hope that some team will claim him; or the Stars could trade him before the March 4 trade deadline.
If Avery is claimed on recall waivers, a team could have him for half of his remaining contract (a four-year deal for $15.5 million). The Stars would pay the other half.
...looks like the first step towards Avery becoming a Ranger has taken place.
