Renney and Pearn Fired

Rick Carpiniello at The Rangers Report says that Tom Renney and Perry Pearn have been fired.

No replacement has been named.

WFAN is reporting that the Rangers are in negotiations with John Tortorella for the head coaching position.

...while numerous Ranger fans are rejoicing on Ranger message boards, I think Renney gets a raw deal here. Listen something needed to be done, but Renney ended up being the scape goat for Sather's terrible signings.

...is Renney guilt free? Not by a long shot. But he helped turn this laughing stock of a franchise into a winner again and, in respect of that, should have been given the year to turn this around. What's the difference this team isn't winning the Cup this year anyway.

I disagree about Renney

you give him way too much credit.

A very viable Jagr was dropped into this team's lap 3 years ago, then they added Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan -- thats 2 hall of fame 600 goal scorers.

This was then followed with Avery, Drury, Gomez, Straka, etc., more all stars.

Add in all star goalie Henrik and pretty much any coach could have (or should have) gone to the playoffs for those 3 straight years

do you really think Renney was the one that brought this team back to respectability?

I disagree with smashmark. This team brought in star after star - Lindros, Fleury, Kovalev, Bure - and never sniffed the playoffs. Renney never sweated the pressure and got this team back...but he obviously brought them only as far as he could.

Thank you Tom, but it was time.

Edward, you are seriously comparing a mentally damaged Lindros, a coked out Fleury, Kovalev and Bure to Jagr and Shanahan?

There was nothing wrong with Renney. He was a good coach it's just easier to fire the coaches than to fire the whole team. The real problem with the Rags is Sather.

Edward is totally right, after the 1994 Cup, the Rangers brought in the biggest free agent names for almost 10 years, not even coming close to the playoffs.
Now take a look at what is happening around the league...The Penguins have all the talent in the world, and needed a new head coach last season to make a playoff run, and with the same tlent this year needed a new voice in behind the bench.

How come the Caps when they had Jagr were never able to accomplish anything?
Renney deserves most of the credit for turning this franchise around....
However, as much as I loved Renney, he thought it was ok to continue to change lines instead of changing assistant coaches, and benching a few over priced player (redden)...
I love the idea of torterella, but as you saw in Tampa, an angry coach gets pretty old fast...but if it means a Stanlry Cup....I'll take it
